My particular obsession is music, especially CDs. They are a lot cheaper compared to vinyl records. I have some vinyl. I like the coloured ones and picture discs, but I wait for Christmas, birthdays or Father's Day to get those.
As a younger man, I would scour the record shops in Manchester, sometimes obtaining stuff where the sleeve design intrigues me. I've bought plenty of crap as a result, but amongst all the muck, there's always the possibility of finding treasure. This has given me a very eclectic taste.
I don't have a particular favourite genre. I don't stay faithful to one artist, although I have favourites I keep up with, such as Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and Madness. I'm not into much chart music these days. But, in the 80s and 90s (teens to early adulthood), I'd listen, tape and log down the Top 40 in a book. I'd watch Top Of The Pops religiously and regularly buy the NME and Smash Hits.
In my middle-age, I will give anything a spin. I check out charity shops and have discovered new favourite bands, like Everything Everything, Delphic etc. This means I've amassed a large and varied collection, from ABBA to ZZ Top and everything in between.
But I like music that's curious and sometimes odd.. I like music that takes a few listens to get into your head. The charity shops help there too. I'd admire a sleeve, pay 50p, and if it's good I might research the artist to find out what else they've released. If it's crap, it's 50p to charity and i'd give it them back to sell again! Win win!
It's led me in odd directions musically, and I'm discovering new music all the time. It is most definitely my autistic obsession!
Anyway, enough about me! What's your music obsession? What's your autistic obsession generally? I'm all ears!
