I don’t  get it either and I’m Irish! I think Martin might be on the right lines with the broad Dublin accent, but even if Bords is an irreverent term for ‘women’, I don’t get how being a pug might mean a woman would fall in love with it. 

As an aside, some animal charities are wanting people to stop breeding and buying puppies with over squashed noses, because the dogs struggle to breathe.

Yes. It's a very old Irish joke, the accent makes it sound like that.

I remember that the Dublin Zoo terrapin enclosure - glass-walled but open-topped with plants, pebbles and larger stones under and around the water - was full of coins. The Iron Age Celtic habit of making votive offerings in water is still alive and well in Ireland!

The joke hinges on the Dublin accent. For 'bords' read 'birds' (young women), and it is also, presumably, short for border collies (breed of dog). I think that's it.

Because of that fact, I must alert you to the fact that you might be suffering from something that I recently learnt about....it is called unconscious ableism.  It means that you are being unreasonable by making a joke that I don't understand.

I hope that my intended sarcastic-jokey-statement above (to you) is understood, not only by you, but also by EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has ever been here, or will ever come here.......because if not, then I guess I am also guilty of serious unconscious ableism too.

Perhaps we should both self-ban ourselves here - or perhaps I will be banned for explaining a new term that was recently explained to me here by another user here - or perhaps we should start a band called "The Banned Ones".........I think my head might explode now......or perhaps I will transmogrify into a Pug myself!!!!!!

Oh no!!  I just used a long weird word = "transmogrify".......so I guess I should signpost a link to a few webpages that explain what it means, or else I am DEFINITELY guilty of CONSCIOUS ableism?!?  I dread to think what the sanction for conscious ableism is here.......perhaps I should refer myself to the Screwtape Letters for guidance.....or would that be considered too elitist and ecclesiastical?
