Nuclear power

Starmer has announced plans for new nuclear power stations dotted about England and Wales, they will be the new small scale ones, rather than the monsters we've been used too. I still don't want them, I don't see nuclear as a clean energy solution, nuclear waste is by definition dirty and you can't make clean with dirty. The waste will still have to be stored somewhere and will still be dangerous for tens of thousands of years, longer than humans have been out of Africa. It's said that it will power the new industries of the future, such as AI, is this a future we want? We will have less opportunities to object to them too, as this sort of development will be green lighted despite any local opposition.

How do you feel about a new nuclear power station on your doorstep?

  • Are you talking about AI or nuclear power?  We have a pretty firm grasp of the factors at play with nuclear power.....but very little clue about what factors will come into play with AI?

  • Didn’t know this forum was quite so unforgiving, wish I hadn’t bothered

I apologise if I was harsh - I do defend my opinions quite strongly but always try to make clear the facts behind the arguements.

I will step back from the keyboard for a bit and would like to apologise for any distress this caused.

  • Yes I think the safety checks and security of AI systems haven’t been thought through. I know it takes a massive amount of energy to run though.

  • Nuclear power, it’s way too much for us to handle safely.

Coal power is 10 times more deadly than nuclear based on safety stats at the plants, and this is heavily skewed by the one big event at Chernobyl.

Have a look at http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2019/ph241/marshall2/ for more detail.

A 2007 study of energy production in Europe assessed accident related risks of several different sources of energy production. The results showed that nuclear energy production averages 0.012 deaths due to accidents per TWh of energy produced. In contrast, coal production averages 0.12 deaths due to accidents per TWh. Indeed, nuclear energy also had a lower number of accident related deaths than all other forms of energy production studied (Oil, Gas, and Lignite).

This graph shows how safe it is compared to all other forms of energy production:
