Word processor

Can anyone recomend me a good word processor, I'm ready to start wrting the first chapter of my book and I don't seem to have a word processor program, I've not used one for about 15 years and that was on windows XP, I just about coped with that one and would like something similar and easy to use.

Sorry I know its hard recomending tech to me as most of it just goes over my head, but any contributions would be gratefully recieved

  • It drives me mental that, just when I have got to grips with how my phone software / arrangement / screens work.....they "auto-update" and everything seems to change again, and normally for the worse in my experience.........it's like this place!

I've got an old android Samsung phone with no subscription.

I just pay £10 a month (on a sim only contract) for calls + texts, and don't get any updates.

I'm saving a fortune by keeping my old phone with the Brucey bonus of the absence of change.

  • Thanks RnR but that's all a bit complicated for me, I'll take it to the shop and get them to sort it out for me, there are a couple of other problems with the pooter too like it trying to load and run chrome and microsoft edge in the back ground and it totally messe everyting up. It's been turned off before, twice, but it keeps switching itself back on again, I'd take them off if I could but I'm told it's not possible.

  • You need the right version for your operating system.

Look in the main settings panel...

    Go to System > About

Then look under the 'Device Specifications'

Under 'System Type' it should tell you whether you are running a 32 bit 64 bit OS (most will be 64 bit).

Once you have this info, you can download the correct version.

    A 64 bit version won't run on a 32 bit system!

    Hope this helps!

  • I'm not a tech-head but I think it might be referring to your operating system whether it's 64 bit or the 32 bit version. No idea what the difference is. I think mine is 64 not sure though the guy in the computer shop did all that side of things for me.

  • that's on disk

This is defo best.  Like you, I'm so glad I "bought" all my key software before download+subscription+auto-update became the ONLY way to do things.

It drives me mental that, just when I have got to grips with how my phone software / arrangement / screens work.....they "auto-update" and everything seems to change again, and normally for the worse in my experience.........it's like this place!

Added to that now, (on my phone)......flipping AI assistants popping up EVERYWHERE.....and you can't turn them off UNLESS you agree to their terms and conditions, to do so!!!!  The world has gone stark raving mental !!!!!!

  • I assume you’re using Windows? Which version?

  • Sorry just went to down load it and it asked me things I don't understand like stuff about 64 bit code and other technical stuff, do I just ignore it and download it anyway?

I've never used it but hopefully someone here can help.

  • Thanks I will try libreoffice and hope it works. I'm finding it hard to find anything on this pooter as I use firefox and it wants me to use chrome or some other program and they keep trying to load even though they've been switched off, they keep turning themselves back on again, so I can't even get into the place where my programs are supposed to be to look for either whats already installed on the machine or how to turn these things off or better yet uninstall them, although I've been told I can't uninstall things like chrome, I don't know why?

  • I use an old version of Microsoft Word for Windows that's on disk.

Unfortunately, most software of this type doesn't seem to be available as a disk these days, which means a subscription or download.

Luckily, I managed to buy a disk version of Adobe Photoshop in 2021 but now I think I'd be stuck with a subscription for an upgrade although with some software you can pay a one off fee but it's still a download rather than a disk.

This thread has been useful for me too, thanks, as my version of Word is very old and I didn't know about LibreOffice which has been mentioned here twice so I shall take a look.

All the very best to you with your writing.

ps  When I first read this I though about my old, dedicated, word processor, before I had a PC and wondered if you were looking for one of those.

You might even still be able to buy one second hand although they would use the now extinct 'floppy disk'.

I've also recently bought an old manual typewriter but that would need to be transferred digitally anyway Blush

  • I use Word from Office 365 and also Excel as that allows me to create character sheets, and locations etc.

However when I first started writing I used Libreoffice - https://www.libreoffice.org/ - it;s a free piece of writing software, not perfect (what is?) ^^ but it's easy to use + free which was ideal for me at the time. I was just reading on their site there's also extensions for Libreoffice now so you might be able to get some free extras for it as well?

Not 100% sure though as I'm not very techy lol. Hope this helps! Good luck with your writing!

I see this was recommended by someone else too, sorry for double posting!

  • This will really depend on your device & operating system.

The good news is, whichever one you are using doesn’t really matter - they all have the same basic functionality and features, which should easily meet your requirements.

If you’re running Microsoft Windows, then you will have a basic word processor (Wordpad) installed as part of the operating system, which should be able to do everything you need (just type Wordpad in the search bar, or look in the start menu apps). You may have MS Word installed too - although this is usually an ‘extra’ bundled with MS office.

If you’re on a Mac, the default word processor is called ‘Pages’.

Whichever device /OS you are using, you can use google docs (online), which is platform independent, meaning you can access anywhere you have an internet connection and on any device.

Hopefully this makes sense & you can locate an app on your device that works for you.

  • I use Microsoft Office 365 but if you’re looking for something free, full featured and well regarded, you could give Libre Office a go…
