Robots in films and tv

I've see some films and tv programs where some bloke ends up having sex with an attractive robot home assistant, who starts to take on the role of "wife". I wonder why there are no similar films and tv where it's an attractive male robot home assistant who tries to push the husband aside?

Is it a male sexual fantasy?

Is it a male fear that women would find a hunky young robot more attractive?

Would women not be as interested?

I'd just like to explore this a little more, what would a film with a hunky male robot taking on the "husband" role look like? Would it be the same or different>

  • Sorry Spikey, but what broken square?

  • There were home-based horse saddles marketed in Victorian times to cure hysteria in females. Mental illness in females was deemed curable by giving them what was called hysterical paroxyms. Many a doctor ended up with repetitive strain injuries through adminiteri G such treatments....

  • Sorry for the typos. But I don't want to end up with problems again if I try to edit this.

  • It is noticeable that the most humanoid robots, androids, tend to be female. Sophia, Erica, and so on. Sophia has (been programmed) to declare vlciferkhsly that dating her might be boring, as she is not 'fully functional' down there.

There are certain fully equipped blow-up dolls of course, and these have been around since the 70's. Females that is. I can't say I've made a point of doing research into whether or not there are fully equipped male dolls.

But the literature does hold out the idea that most females would in fact be looking more than whether or not an a froid would enjoy full functionality, as Data first coyly remind Diker, on first meeting, and as Gasba Yar wanted to know. I don't think she fell in love with him though, vutvGanith Lee did write a pretty steamy tale about a young girl who does fall madly in love with a robot, and runs away with him. But it's not the package tbat matters most to her, but her suspicion, madly denied on the part of the robot, that he has a soul.

And there you have it. The much more pressing question is at what point of programming could a robot be said to possess consciousness, rather than just being a clever and responsive machine. And does AI have it ? Has SF ready caught up?

Some humanoid robots sell their artworks for millions, when many sad mortals sell theirs for peanuts.

Some SF takes this argument from the other angle, exploring the idea of selective empathy, which most ordinary, nice individuals possess. When we assign full humanity to some groups of people, but not to others. And what it is like for those whim we do not assign full humanity. The book Planet of the Apes is all about that. The writer had been a prisoner of war in a Japanese camp.....

  • Catwoman - you need to click the broken square...

  • I don't know, but I can do a Sid James cackle!

  • Cue the penny whistle oooOOOOOP!! (how DO you spell that penny whistle sound?!)

  • Or would they're batteries run down to quick? Would there be universal charging points or special ones for "Tesla" models like there are with the cars? lol Don't want the smell of burning rubber! Oh-er Mrs!

Yep vibrators have come out of the closet, can't say they do anything for me personally, I think some have attachments that men like too!

I know what you mean Iain, about the idea not appealing to the patriarchy of Hollywood movie exec's. Some women would find a robot for sex OK, lots of women have thier emotional relationships with other women even though they're hetrosexual and married with kids. I think they have a good relationship with thier husbands, but don't get their emotional needs met in the way they need. I wonder if women would have sex with female robots or would lesbianism not be programmed as a function? The thing about a robotic assistant is it would be exclusive and you'd "know" your assistant and feel some sort of relationship with them. I guess part of the attraction of a robotic assistant for a man would be the "Trad Wife" thing, whereas for women there's no real equivalent.

Sorry I'd like tis to be a serious thread, but it's also funny and is causing me to break out into Carry On style humour.

  • I know at least a few of us fit the stereotype of being autistic and working in IT, I dare suspect this thread will lead to code being written! Rofl

  • This is an interesting question because (and I have to word this carefully...) on the whole, in this current day and age, it is women who are happy to replace male body parts with electronic robot parts whereas the alternative equivalent hasn't really taken off in mainstream life. Women can proudly exclaim their love of these devices in normal TV shows without shame. The opposite is not true.

  • be able to spot the flaws in it's partner and ditch them..

Nah, they would introduce micropayments to offer compliments, for listening (and remembering) to the partner and to come up with creative meal plans (and cook).

Heck it sounds appealing to me - once Apple do one I'm subscribing, especially if it can do my accounts as well. Forget the sex, the other stuff is right on point.

  • I think it could be male insecurities, the robot wouldn't have a complex mind of it's own, driven by logic, passion and emotions and be able to spot the flaws in it's partner and ditch them...

  • I wonder why there are no similar films and tv where it's an attractive male robot home assistant who tries to push the husband aside?

A part of this is down to the majority of Hollywood execs and directors / producers being male and making this story from a female perspective would be less appealing to them.

Another part would be that I'm not sure women would find the idea that resonating.

My experience of women is that they want more of an emotional connection to engage in sex, whether in a relationship of something more superficial for casual sex. Men are more willing to project their ideas onto the target of their fantasies and ignore the reality which is probably why there is a much larger market for female prostitutes than for male ones in hetrosexual services.

I would think that a robotic assistant would be too "cold and unfeeling" to be of much interest for the partners I have had based on conversations around the subject.

While various adult toys are certaily popular these days I think a partner level toy would take a different mindset to deal with although I imagine with the way generational thinking seems to be changing then this is a possibility for the future.

I wonder if they would be as prone to busting into flames as Teslas are though - a worrying thought Wink
