Overcoming hoarding at home

  • Seeking tips (hacks) and experiences of other asd adults - how have you managed to dispose of excess items at home, where the volume has become troublesome? I have started taking action and donated a few items but the process has stalled because I’m ambivalent about letting things go. Help please !

  • Hello,

I’m very new and a parent of 10 yr old daughter waiting for an assessment/diagnosis. This is the first reference I have found linking ASD and hoarding.

My daughter collects stones/sticks/leaves/street trash as a compulsion when she’s tired/stressed. She explains it as every one is different. Every empty packet is unique. She cannot differentiate the items and everything, at this point, is of equal value.
When ready and calm she can bag and remove from her room but only if I say I’ll store them elsewhere. Once out of sight she generally doesn’t care about them.
This thread talks about therapy and root causes. Can anyone provide any further understanding for me? There’s so little support at this point in the process I’m unsure how to support her.

Is it likely a control thing? Or something else?

    Thank you.
