Hitting in autism

Thanks Coggy, at moment find best thing to do is to leave on own when having meltdown, wont let us near her to cuddle or hold, if you enter her space at all she lashes out, even when doing something she likes still hitting, so hard, she does like music though dance music helps calm though again only if left alone. Totally agree its trial and error all tips or strategies to help greatly appreciated thanks

Have you considered signing? A friend of mine has had good success with this, however, when my son was younger he would lash out violently also. We were told it was sensory overload. We used to just hold him tight until it disapated or play calming music. Shower time was the worst, then we discovered he found the water against his skin too painful. We switched to baths and things calmed dramatically. Now he is older we are finding his emotional outbursts a lot harder to manage. We have to give him space. Overcrowding him often precipitates an outburst. I think it's very much trial and error. I hope you find a solution that works for you. I know how distressing these outbursts are to witness and to cope with.
