Toilet Training

Hi, my daughter Lillie is 6 and has ASD amongst other complex needs and we have recently started on the long journey of toilet training.  We would really appreciate any feedback off parents who have been successful in this long and difficult task!! Also please include any tips or ideas of things you tried that worked.

Thanks

Julie and Peter

  • Hi Julie and Peter,

I have just joined the community. The potty training DVD "Once Upon A Potty" (American) worked for my 4 year old son with Autism. He watched this DVD repeatedly for 2 weeks, then clicked. He is now toilet trained. The DVD illustrates the various body parts beautifully and tells the story of a little boy called Joshua, which my son found very engaging. I put a potty infront of the TV to encourage interaction. My son eventually copied Joshua's actions and repeated the story (echolia), which he found very amusing. I highly recommend this DVD, since we had no success prior to this purchase. We have managed to gradually transition to the toilet and now just have the occassional accident.

    Best of luck.
