Toilet Training

Hi, my daughter Lillie is 6 and has ASD amongst other complex needs and we have recently started on the long journey of toilet training.  We would really appreciate any feedback off parents who have been successful in this long and difficult task!! Also please include any tips or ideas of things you tried that worked.

Thanks

Julie and Peter

  • Hi Julie and Peter,

I have just joined the community. The potty training DVD "Once Upon A Potty" (American) worked for my 4 year old son with Autism. He watched this DVD repeatedly for 2 weeks, then clicked. He is now toilet trained. The DVD illustrates the various body parts beautifully and tells the story of a little boy called Joshua, which my son found very engaging. I put a potty infront of the TV to encourage interaction. My son eventually copied Joshua's actions and repeated the story (echolia), which he found very amusing. I highly recommend this DVD, since we had no success prior to this purchase. We have managed to gradually transition to the toilet and now just have the occassional accident.

    Best of luck.

  • Hello, i have an eleven year old and he wasnt toilet trained until he was maybe 7 ......I tried every trick in the book with him, we made him a story board which was laminated and was in our toilet at home and in the school, so we were all using the same symbols/pictures, I had an "Autism Advisor" at the time and she suggested i get a "poppy cat book" cant quite remember the name of the book but it all folds out and makes a little paper house theres a living room/kitchen and a bathroom, which includes a toilet, at the time my son loved scooby doo so we made silly puppet shows of scooby needs the toilet and showed him using the book what happened (hes a visual learner) theres probably more we tried and the school was really helpful too.
I wish i could say we had a magic answer but one monday morning he woke up told me he didnt need a nappy anymore, walked upstairs and did a pee, and i can honeslty say that was him sorted, from that moment on he still has occasional accident but thats because he leaves everything to the last min and sometimes isnt fast enough to the toilet, hope this helps a little, there is hope xxxxxxxx

  • Hello Julie and Peter, and Tracey.

I thought I would just pass on a link to NAS website information about toilet training in case you hadn't seen it:

    http://www.autism.org.uk/living-with-autism/understanding-behaviour/toilet-training.aspx

Hopefully you might find something useful there.

Please keep letting us know how you're getting on if you can, and then perhaps more users will be able to join in and share ideas as the discussion develops.

    I wish you all luck.

  • Hi Julie and Peter

You have asked the same question as I intended to ask! I'm disappointed that nobody has responded as yet. My daughter will be 6 in Jan and I've had no success with toilet training. I've tried every trick in the book and nothing has worked so far. Have you found any ideas that have worked for you?

Is your daughter at a mainstream school? My daughter Emily is and she starts yr1 very soon. In reception I had to resort to sending her with pull up nappies, but the school and I are concerned about other children noticing now that they are getting older...they may start to tease her and that would cause other problems for her to cope with. Also the school are concerned that they are not supposed to change her cos of health and safety rules.

  • Hi Julie and Peter,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll move this to the Parents and Carers section where you might find more parents will respond, along with other similar discussions.

And whilst I'm doing that, I'd be remiss not to point you in the direction of our article on toilet training. Not sure if you've already seen it but might be a useful read in addition to other people's feedback.
