Sharing community content on social media

Hi all,

I'm starting this thread to try and test the waters regarding sharing community content externally.

Before I joined, it was semi-regular practice to tweet out (or Facebook update) a link to interesting discussions going on in the community. Everything on the community is public & viewable without requiring an account, so it's a useful way to encourage our followers to join the conversations here. It's also a good way to get the helpful information onto our different networks.

Do any of you have any concerns around this?

  • The first posting on any thread can be openly found by search engines from outside, and that accesses the page with all the subsequent postings.

To check this still applies I searched for the title of Anil A Mod's posting, with the addition of "autism" -"sharing autism community content on social media" on Google and it was the second item found.

So anyone who can find the right subject matter has been able to read any posting all the time the discussion forum has operated, without going to the NAS website. And of course you can read our forum without logging on (unlike the proferssionals version which is log on access only).

  • Sorry if I was unclear, having re-read my post I can see where it might lack clarity. Currently there aren't any links to our community on the NAS social media channels, except for when I recommend to someone they may find it beneficial to join - say if someone comments on our Facebook looking to speak to other parents.

What I propose is for me to take a link to any interesting conversation and tweet/post about it. This was semi-regular practice before I joined and is very common among online communities, in particular Mumsnet who use this with great success. Good example here https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152134752824025&set=a.154473949024.111191.146972519024&type=1&stream_ref=10

For instance I'd probably do something like this

"Interesting conversation happening on community about getting to sleep. Why not visit *Link to thread* to join in"

It's likely this would just trigger conversation on our social media pages, which is useful for our followers. A small number of people who see the post may choose to join the community and contribute, which would be wonderful.

At the moment, the community doesn't have a lot of visibility on the NAS website (we're working on improving this) and this would help us grow. Given that most of our followers on social media are following us because they have an interest in autism, or the NAS, it's very unlikely we'd have more trolls/spam coming in.

I wouldn't say this would give any of you a presence on social media. Those sites won't have your details or know anything about you. If you're worried we'll be plugging the community into social media, that's not the case at all.

Intenseworld - Thank you for pointing out the google thing, you're exactly right on that. I feel I should mention the wider public in this instance are NAS followers (parents, adults on the spectrum, etc) , who have an interest in autism.  There won't be a way of identifying you, especially as you respect the anonymity of the site.

DaisyGirl & Intenseworld, really appreciate the feedback, I'll hold off and wait to hear from anyone else who wants to comment. I'd try to take care in what threads I choose, and would be the usual topics probably (Sleep, diagnosis, etc). I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has any thoughts on how to go about this in a way that would make them feel comfortable.

  • I have concerns, which might sound strange.  It's like, I knew it was public but in my mind it was like a safe little community where only people who had some relevant cause to be here would be.  That may be an incorrect assumption, but how my mind saw it.  Knowing it's going to the wider public, in a deliberate way, immediately (despite using an online pseudonymn) made me worry if I have said anything on here that I wouldn't want going elsewhere (and I can't think what on earth I would have said to which that applies either).  It's probably me being silly as it is illogical, but it's my gut reaction.  I know Googling key phrases could bring anyone in the world to the forum anyway.

On the positive side, I can see where useful information that has been discussed could be brought to a wider audience without the need for them to physically search using terms that might match, and autism awareness is a good thing.

Just my initial thoughts, not necessarily meant to influence what path the decision takes.  I think also, my Aspieness means changing something I'm used to the way it is, instigates a knee-jerk reaction.

  • Can you please be more sepcific about what it is you want to do/are doing regarding sharing content externally.

I would have thought it was better for people to find the community through the NAS website, thereby limiting the number of potential trolls, timewasters and also spam etc. I am not on facebook or twitter and don't want to be. I had no idea there were any links to this community on those social media.
