I highly recommend book called "all cats have asperger syndome". It helped my sons who were of similar age to yours. It might be helpful to point out the numerous famous people who have (Bill Gates) or are thought to have had AS (Einstein)
My sons are comfortable with their condition and now are happy to tell people they have AS and ask for assistance. In turn those around them are eager to learn about AS and help the boys develop their social and communication skills.
Hope it goes well.
Hi again - my son is only 6. I didn't ever want it to be a secret and wanted it just to be part of who he is. Also he was asking about his hospital appointments so it just came up in conversation. I really focus on the positive stuff he can do really well and then talk about the things he finds trickier. We also have another book from NAS called 'How Joshua learned' which my son really relates to. I don't think for a minute he's taken it all in but I just preferred to be open and honest and then we can talk about it whenever. I really worried about telling him but so far so good!
