Got any nightmare flatmate stories? Post them here if you want

I've just got out of a nightmare flatmate scenario and was feeling very depressed about it today. About an hour ago I found the reddit r/badflatmates and it really helped... I'm really not alone in having a string of horrible and even abusive flatmates.

Does anyone have any nightmare flatmate stories? Please post them here if you have them, they honestly make me feel better!

If you're curious, my latest flatmate was OCD about cleaning and not in a good way. She mopped the floor every night at midnight, noisily, and woke me up doing so. I told her to stop several times and she didn't. She complained constantly about that flat missing this and that. She would regularly emotionally unload on me and not respect me when I didn't want her to talk to me and told her to stop. I was getting fed up because it was clear it wasn't all about her "mental health" and more she was using me as an emotional punchbag. I was very pleased when she gave notice in writing - finally, she's gone! Unfortunately she was nothing but trouble in the actual leaving process because she refused to pay rent and threatened to sue me.

Well, I collected evidence and told her any further emails or interaction from her will result in the police being called and off she scarpered.

Fortunately my current flatmate is wonderful, but that's because I already knew her from a family friend. I'm worried about the next time I'll need to find a flatmate on spareroom and the like (this flatmate actually had a clean reference record before me as well....)...

Parents
  • I shared a student house with 3 others, 2 I knew before we moved in, both private individuals who kept themselves to themselves, we spent as much or as little time together as we wanted, and were generally in agreement on most household matters.

The fourth - well. She approached us looking for a place to live because she couldn't find anywhere- should've been a red flag in hindsight. As the rent would be cheaper and we had a spare room, we agreed.

What an error! She was annoyingly intrusive, obsessed with cleaning- really. She would come back late at night, when everyone else was in bed and start noisily cleaning the house. She scrubbed the pans until the non-stick coating came off!

Well, it was annoying, but, we could just about cope. But then, she would never pay for anything! We all took turns to buy household items, but getting her to do it was almost impossible! And on the few occasions she did, she bought as little and as cheap as possible!

We had a cat who came to live with us, randomly, as cays do, and she hated him! She chased and even kicked him - and he was the nicest, softest cat in the world.

And then, when we all left uni, she changed her phone so we couldn't chase her for final bills!

Although we tracked her down in the end.

  • A happy ending to your story  Slight smile

  • Yes!

Not paying when everyone else had to - outrageous!
