Does just simply reading books on Autism help you to understand loved ones and friends who are Autistic?
When I was first thinking I had autism I bought a lot of books on autism by autistic authors and it was a big help to me and why I pursued getting a diagnosis. Just reading about autism was reassuring for me. Not for all maybe but for some reading autistic books of lived experiences of the autistic authors will help them to better understand autism in a loved one or themselves.
It worked for me.
I think reading of others experiences can be a big help in many ways. It's someone you can relate to if you are the same and can be inspiring.
I want to write a book on autism and my own lived experiences.
I've never liked reading, I do collect books, But I don't read them. lol,
Thanks
I have read The reason I jump, I would say that’s a favourite.
I recommend Untypical by Pete Wharmby. I listened to the audible version. It's fantastic
It helps me understand myself better and it's reassuring, comforting even, to know I'm not alone in this world. At times it can feel very lonely so it's good to read others' books on experiencing autism.
What's been your favourite autism book you've read?
You are very welcome!
Yes. Learning about autistic lived experience from autistic people is the best way to learn. You can learn about the intersectionality and diversity within our community by learning about Black, LGBTQIA+, physically disabled autistics and especially overlooked people in our community including non speaking and apraxic autistics.
You could simply just ask your friend about their autistic experience!
Aucademy is also a great autistic led education platform:
