Fav parts of autism

When I hear about ASD I hear a lot of negativity, and that's fair enough because it can be a negative debilitating condition to live with and experience. I was diagnosed five years ago, in the middle of my teens and it was a rollercoaster of a time, though I feel like I'm more knowledgeable on my ASD now.

My fav parts of my ASD are -

Eye for detail, noticing everything, the smallest details that most other people wouldn't ever notice.

Fast learner, by this I mean if I'm interested in learning something then I learn it fast. And I mean fast. It never seems to take me long to pick something up. I think this is why I enjoyed the learning aspect of school. The ONLY part of school I enjoyed. Upside down

Organised, I'm a very organised person and this was one thing the assessor's paid particular attention to. I'm organised in every way. If I go out, I preplan the route I'm taking, study it on Google Maps. I take backup supplies in my bag. I make a mental note of things I'll need, and then take a backup paper note in case I forget.

Stims - the wonderful world of stimming! Stimming might actually be my fav part of having ASD. My fav stims is bouncing when I'm excited, clapping my hands, playing with my hair and purring like a cat when I'm feeling happy and safe. Slight smile

Excellent memory - I have a fab memory in which I'm able to retain so much info. I picture my brain like a huge study full of books that hold all the memories and info in my brain that I can access when needed.

Ability to mimic - I can mimic almost anyone, specifically their voices and movements. This helps me get by in society. Masking.

Special interest, for me it's writing. Blush

  • For me it is being prepared for stuff.

For example I do a lot of property renovation and mechanical maintenance so having the right tools, necessary materials (oils, greases, primer paint etc) to take care of a job in quick order make me feel very capable in a world where I otherwise feel at a bit of a disadvantage.

Also for responding here I have created a list of info of resources and books that enable me to give fairly detailed responses to commonly asked questions.

Having an eye for changes in patterns makes me vey suited to diagnosing problems. I understand how stuff works so can spot where something is out of place or not behaving quite as it should (eg when a complex window will not open properly I can identiy the cause be watching the mechanism and tracing the movement of the parts).

Logical thinking can be a benefit when applied to project planning too - working through all the nuts and bolts of a project, planning the steps, working out the risks and how to deal with them and tracking it as I work through it helps me be very effective at the projects I take on.

Sometimes I wish I was more artistic but it doesn't really make me lose sleep at night,
