Fav parts of autism

When I hear about ASD I hear a lot of negativity, and that's fair enough because it can be a negative debilitating condition to live with and experience. I was diagnosed five years ago, in the middle of my teens and it was a rollercoaster of a time, though I feel like I'm more knowledgeable on my ASD now.

My fav parts of my ASD are -

Eye for detail, noticing everything, the smallest details that most other people wouldn't ever notice.

Fast learner, by this I mean if I'm interested in learning something then I learn it fast. And I mean fast. It never seems to take me long to pick something up. I think this is why I enjoyed the learning aspect of school. The ONLY part of school I enjoyed. Upside down

Organised, I'm a very organised person and this was one thing the assessor's paid particular attention to. I'm organised in every way. If I go out, I preplan the route I'm taking, study it on Google Maps. I take backup supplies in my bag. I make a mental note of things I'll need, and then take a backup paper note in case I forget.

Stims - the wonderful world of stimming! Stimming might actually be my fav part of having ASD. My fav stims is bouncing when I'm excited, clapping my hands, playing with my hair and purring like a cat when I'm feeling happy and safe. Slight smile

Excellent memory - I have a fab memory in which I'm able to retain so much info. I picture my brain like a huge study full of books that hold all the memories and info in my brain that I can access when needed.

Ability to mimic - I can mimic almost anyone, specifically their voices and movements. This helps me get by in society. Masking.

Special interest, for me it's writing. Blush

Please feel free to share yours.

  • am deeply uncool and having a great time with it.

    Funny! Embrace nonconformity!

  • My favourite things about being autistic are the joy I get from the things I love and my obliviousness to peer pressure. I am deeply uncool and having a great time with it.

(Regarding that second point, I have been quite high-masking since my teens but it's more that I wanted to be seen as reasonable and polite rather than wanting to fit in. I think I realised at a very young age that I wouldn't fit in even if I tried and decided not to bother!)

  • Working from home has been the best thing for me, I've flourished not having to cope with workplace

It’s great that working from home works well for you!

  • Obsession - but sometimes it's short lived, so it that really obsession?

No, in autistic culture it is called a dedicated interest or passion.

It’s not an obsession because obsessions are not enjoyable and usually part of OCD.

    What are your dedicated interests?

  • Although not yet formally diagnosed, my things are:

    Attention to detail

    Organisation

Logic thinking - which helps when looking at problems and suggesting improvements to working practices

Obsession - but sometimes it's short lived, so it that really obsession?

Working from home has been the best thing for me, I've flourished not having to cope with workplace

    My empathy

  • I love being autistic!

So do I! It’s great that you are so positive about your autistic identity.

I love how being autistic makes me so passionate, I love the intensity which I feel everything and I love talking to my fellow neurokin like you!

  • Thanks Blush that was an interesting read. I love being autistic!

  • neurotypicals are missing out.

Stimming is so cool, it’s such a shame!  Neurotypicals stim in other ways though.

    Stim with pride!

  • I love various bits of my autism.

I like my attention to detail. I don't brush over things the same way I see others do.

I like my ability to follow instructions exactly. This makes me ideal for tasks that require precision and following set steps, it also makes me good at using scripts, which is how I mask. It's also good for dog training, I'm consistent which the dogs like.

I also like stimming. Rocking feels amazing, dancing with no music brings me joy, neurotypicals are missing out.

  • I love being autistic! I love the way I interpret language very literally as it can be very funny!

  • I love hyper focus and info dumping too! Info  dumping is one of the many autistic love languages.

I suppose you love to info dump about Doctor Who (among other dedicated interests)?

Here is a post I created about neurodivergent love languages:

  • I guess my favourite part of being an autistic is that I get so obsessed by the things I like and enjoy. For me there's no greater feeling when I'm so obsessed in something. I also like how I'm able to retain information and facts and then can info dump it on other people Blush

  • dunno. i like who i am, i dont like how others are towards me lol

i suppose any extra plus also has a downside... my hearing is very sharp, i can hear high pitch that no one else can, cat alarms, bat noises if bats are also normal to hear, i could hear the puncture on my dads car tyre and alert him to it when no one else could hear it and thought i was just hearing things until i proved it with bubbles from water around where i could hear the air seeping out.

but also this hearing is probably also bad, some peoples voices are muffled probably too different frequency or people just mumble too much... or perhaps i dont pay attention to what people are saying lol another downside is that workplace noise can be way too much, too much constant clanging and scraping noises along with the chatter of hundreds of people all at once and the annoying bass beat music they put on crazy high nightclub deafening volumes to try and cover up all the other noise which just makes it all a jumbled mess of skull thudding annoyance i have to be forced to stay in for anywhere up to 16 hours a day.

  • Who is your favourite superhero? Is Marvel or DC better?

  • I really like the idea of this post. Let’s focus on some positivity!

    - I love being organised and tidy!
    - I like the ability to process things logically and provide a different perspective when giving friends/ family advice.
    - I like being able to be at peace and enjoy my own company.
    - I love that once I have an interest in something I’m able to process it, understand it and dissect it in ways that most other people can’t.

    My special interest is superhero’s!!

  • A few things on your list would also be on mine.

My favourite things about it are:

    - Being organised. It never ceases to amaze me how so many people aren't. It helps me at work. I don't forget to do things, drift off onto more interesting things. I tend to get fairly responsible jobs that other people would find boring as a result. Even outside of work, it has lots of advantages.

    - Attention to detail. I spot things that other people miss. Similar to above.

    - Being self-sufficient. When my company had to switch to working from home in lockdown, lots of people simply couldn't manage that. I was fine. I preferred it.

    - Being honest and spotting people who aren't. I don't blag, and I don't fall for people who do.

  • For me it is being prepared for stuff.

For example I do a lot of property renovation and mechanical maintenance so having the right tools, necessary materials (oils, greases, primer paint etc) to take care of a job in quick order make me feel very capable in a world where I otherwise feel at a bit of a disadvantage.

Also for responding here I have created a list of info of resources and books that enable me to give fairly detailed responses to commonly asked questions.

Having an eye for changes in patterns makes me vey suited to diagnosing problems. I understand how stuff works so can spot where something is out of place or not behaving quite as it should (eg when a complex window will not open properly I can identiy the cause be watching the mechanism and tracing the movement of the parts).

Logical thinking can be a benefit when applied to project planning too - working through all the nuts and bolts of a project, planning the steps, working out the risks and how to deal with them and tracking it as I work through it helps me be very effective at the projects I take on.

Sometimes I wish I was more artistic but it doesn't really make me lose sleep at night,
