Suzuki - "Good Different" TV Advert

I was just wondering whether anyone had noticed the Suzuki TV advert, the one where they say they tell jokes to bolts and have grannies knit cardigans for the cars? They start the advert by asking what makes Suzuki cars "Good Different" and end by saying that their cars are "Good Different".

I'm just wondering if anyone else feels a bit uncomfortable about the use of "Good Different" - it explicitly assumes the existence of "Bad Different" which is a bit...  well,  very... hurtful perhaps?

Has anyone else noticed that? Am I being oversensitive?

  • I don't think I've seen that advert, or if I have then it hasn't registered with me.

Personally, I would just be inclined to take the advert at face value and not read too much into it. Life's too short to worry about if Suzuki is assuming the existence of "bad different". It's just a slogan and not really all that different from M&S creating the impression that what they sell is superior to other brands, because "it's not just any [insert name of item], it's an M&S [insert name of item].

  • Are you mean those food porn adverts? ‘This is not just a gimp mask, this is an S&M gimp mask.’ Lol

Unfortunately human beings as standard assume that different is usually bad. so yes it’s a little narrow in its phrasing. Contrast with apples think different. But at the end of the day it’s a slogan from a corporation. It’s designed to sell product not be profound.

  • Yes, you are correct in thinking it was the M&S food adverts I had in mind.

Although some of their adverts have had the desired effect of causing me to salivate, it's never been to the extent of making me feel compelled to rush out and buy the item.
