Fired from work

I was fired from my work. They let me know in the WhatsApp group chat. I'm a bit dismayed as I worked really really hard. I did a lot for them and now they've told me I'm not going back. I don't know what to say back to them in the chat. Quite hurt by this.

  • Try not to worry too much about it.

If they didn't have the nerve to tell you bad news to your face, is that a sort of organisation that you want to work for?

I was made redundant last year. I was based in an IT department, then without warning or prior experience, I was placed in a customer service department where I received verbal abuse. It was almost as though that they didn't have the nerve to tell me that they had no more work for me, and wanted to make my time there as miserable as possible so that I would hand my notice in.

  • This sort of thing happens sometimes when employers take things right down to the wire. They calculate the very last day they can close a factory and avoid extra charges like another months rent or The extension of some important service contract  and that’s the amount of time they have to save it. And they act like everything is fine but like a duck they’re paddling like crazy under the water trying to find a way to save the factory. And when it doesn’t work and they run out of time suddenly they have to sack everyone in a day.

it’s a failure to communicate and it’s very often a deliberate failure to communicate because they’re trying to control information. After all one way they might try to save a factory is to sell it off to another company but if it is widely known because of worker gossip that this particular businesses on the ropes they’ll probably get a much worse price for the factory.

  • It’s not fair on people, but via email or remotely is something employers often do when they have to let a lot of staff  go very quickly. Because if you have to sack 50+ people within the space of a day you do not have time for individual meetings to tell each one that they’re getting sacked. And if you gather 50+ people in a room and tell them all together they're getting sacked, well employers tend to find this very intimidating and so they prefer to do it over email.

this kind of thing happens when a company decides say a whole factories is so un economic in order to save money they have to close it right away without any delay. and of course they can’t spend a lot of time having a lot of managers of the factory bring people in and telling them 1 on 1 that they’re being sacked because the managers are being sacked too.

  • Just to be clear did they say why you are fired? Is it a standard redundancy by downsizing and letting a lot of staff go? Or are they accusing you of some misconduct that got you fired? Or maybe they’re making you redundant but suspiciously it’s only you and nobody else as if they want to get rid of you?

  • I am not surprised you feel hurt. Being fired from your job is horrible enough, but for you to be notified via a WhatsApp group chat is, quite frankly, appalling.

If I was in your shoes, I'd be inclined to look upon it as a blessing. Do you really want to be working for an employer who thinks it's acceptable to fire people via WhatsApp?

  • You should say "Thank you! I've been hoping you would do this. I can do better than a dead end job like this"

My sister threw that back to her own boss and not only did it make her ex employer feel tiny but also made my sister feel ecstatic.

You are better than working for people like that. Sounds like you had a lucky escape.
