Sharing this on here because I know there are other birdwatchers around, just had a great spotted woodpecker on my bird feeders in my back garden! Had my binoculars next to me so got a good look
In fact, I saw another on Saturday in my friend's garden on her feeders but she lives in the countryside.
Yes that's interesting as Chaffinches used to be common and again I haven't seen one for a while.
Thanks it is good to know they are still somewhere.
I saw one yesterday in our garden but it was the 1st in a very long time.
I wondered that recently as well. Turns out there's been a decline in their population as well as chaffinches:

I have a question. When I was a child we often had greenfinches in our garden but I haven't seen as any for years. Does anyone get greenfinches visiting their garden?
Yep, that was the deal with my husband, I could have bulk loads of feed if I could guarantee it wouldn't attract rodents. Other than the squirrels on the bird feeders!
It is a good idea to have bins, as one year a mouse found our seed. It made a nest in a welly boot.
I'd love to I've in a village but my husband is a confirmed city boy unfortunately. Maybe in a few years I'll convince him because that all sounds wonderful!
Starlings are quite comical, making a bit of a chattery noise and not keeping still for long. Their feathers have a greenish shimmer if the light catches them. In contrast blackbirds are still in between and either sing beautifully from trees or make a high pitched alarm call if there is a threat in sight.
Becky,
I live in a village and used to get a green woodpecker in my garden quite often. Once there was a pair of them with a young one - they were stunning. i've not seen a great spotted..... yet.
Another time, during a snowy period, we had a red kite hanging around for a few days. He caused some excitment, the local children thought he was a golden eagle!
I often hear owls hooting, but alas never see them.
It's good to have a garden.
Ben
they're pritty spectacular birds, but it never seems to hang around long. it's still really nice to see though
I'd love that, I hear an owl sometimes but I've yet to see it.
I get to see a barn owl every now and then fly past the house, it's amazing just how big they are when they're flying, but they're really quite small when they're perched
I use the Merlin bird ID app, you can take a photo and it will ID from that, or from birdsong, as well as having the directory to look through of birds that could be in your local area.
Oh could be. Hasn’t realised they weren’t so keen on flocks. I must admit I’m not great at identifying the types. Like I’d know a gull from a robin or whatever but the more subtle ones, not so much. I should get a book to help identify them. Lots of garden visitors though curiously empty skies today. Too still and warm?
I have more bird feeders than is probably good for me! I just invested in some metal bins to start buying food in bulk because it's so much cheaper that way.
Between those, the oystercatchers and the curlews they can make quite the noise.
A few weeks ago the lapwings were out in force, more than I've ever heard before. It's a very strange call but lovely all the same. I'm very lucky to live where I do
I like to put bird seeds on the bird table and watch them fly down and gobble it up.
