Sharing this on here because I know there are other birdwatchers around, just had a great spotted woodpecker on my bird feeders in my back garden! Had my binoculars next to me so got a good look
Didn't see it but I can hear the distinct call of a collared dove in the trees nearby.
There's a pair locally here as well I see them sometimes but they don't tend to come on my feeders. I need to get a proper bird table as they like more open feeding. Loads of wood pigeons though, in fact there's one pecking away at the suet block on the pine tree.
I prefer the sound of the collared dove too. They are also smaller and I think more attractive.
They sound like they're saying "who-who-whooo" to me, like a very confused person who doesn't know who someone is.
Aw that's lovely. I know this is maybe a bit picky and bizarre but I like the sound of the collared dove better than the call of the wood pigeon. For some reason when I hear wood pigeons they always sound like an elderly person I once knew with a really bad smokers cough, and it's just oddly disconcerting to me on a fundamental level that the subtle change in pitch/tone makes all the difference.
