Music - Cover Versions & Lesser Known Originals

I thought I would start a new music thread to share cover versions or less well known versions of original songs (sometimes the cover versions are more famous).

I'm going to start the ball rolling with these three covers.....

Gimme Shelter by Merry Clayton (Rolling Stones original) youtu.be/AHvXhWJ0oHU

Jumpin' Jack Flash by Thelma Houston (Rolling Stones original) https://youtu.be/6Gg1AcIM_8E

Dear Prudence by Jerry Garcia (Beatles original) https://youtu.be/7SoHwjznie8

  • My favourite is Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" covered by Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart with Jason Bonham (John's son) on drums. Led Zeppelin were recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors (American spelling, sorry!) during Obama's presidency. The 3 surviving members were in the audience to watch this cover. No pressure, eh?!

I found it on YouTube and I didn't think it would be possible to play a successful cover of such a rock classic but it was superb. They added choirs and an orchestra. There was a subtle but moving tribute to the late John Bonham. It was very emotional to watch. I still watch it regularly, as do a lot of fans.

  • It sounds amazing, I will have a look. Steve Wright often played Hearts big power ballad, “ All I want to do is make love to you,” stairway to Heaven was also covered by Rolf Harris, he headlined Glasto one Sunday. We won’t go any further there.

I have Robert Plants childhood car in the back of a garage, this is Roberts mum and sister, I have all the provenance for the car, unfortunately no time to restore it.

  • Wow, that's so cool. Thanks for posting the photos. I have an interest in cars, though they're American models. My favourite is the 1967 Ford Mustang.

Weirdly, I saw (the dreadful) Rolf Harris perform Stairway to Heaven in Melbourne, Australia in the mid 1990s. The audience was mainly insurance company customers. I was the youngest person there.

I also had the misfortune of meeting him twice in the early 2000s in London: once at an animal hospital with my cat as he filmed his TV programme. Then I met him at a cat show and spoke with him. He was nasty and sarcastic and he didn't like it when I answered him back sarcastically too. The worst "celebrity" I ever met.

But more positively, thanks again for the fab photos of Robert Plant's childhood car Grin
