Bad memory

My memory sucks. At school I had to read this book and retell bits but by the end of the class and my turn to read I couldn't remember any names from the book. My teacher said it was intentionally, it actually wasn't

But I've noticed it happens all the time. If I watch something I remember the plot but not the characters names. I wonder if this is autism related but all the reading I've done online doesn't say much about it in kids or adults with autism. It's a real problem for me and I'm worried if its like that now what about when I'm 20 like or 50. I'll probably forget to eat and drink by then

I dunt know what to do about it

  • Memory is an amazing thing..

Your brain is amazing and your memory is part of that, you will be perfectly fine and I know that because there's a possibility this has something to do with AS, because I am the same!

Think of your brain like a computer, you might feel like your ram is low, but the reality is your brain is loading tons of files and it has a priority list to what takes more room in your head, names are not important at first instance, but the plot and the character personalities stuck easier.

Books are harder on memory than real life because real life gives you alot more like sight, smell, touch, feeling and context..

When I am in a room full of people I am meeting at the same time for the first time, names go out the window almost immediately, second time, I remember them better after the context stuck.

Your brain will do what's best for you out there in the real world, but school and studying is a different fish!

Acknowledge where you need to make an additional effort to remember things (like names in books etc) but don't be too hard on yourself, you are not going to forget to eat or drink years later. School and teenage years are hard, so I wish you the best.

  • Maybe you are not interested in names? You did remember the plot. I'm sure there are some things you remember very well. There are some memory tricks you can use to memorise names you need to know, but really what is the point of storing the names of characters from shows/books if you have no intention of watching/reading them again? How are you at remembering the names of actual people you know?

Forgetting to eat and drink will probably only happen if you also have poor interroception and don't know when you are hungry or thirsty, that can happen. Or in hyperfocus.

Some things I remember very well, like new vocab words, other things I really struggle with, like numbers. Don't worry too much, but if it bothers you, google memory techniques.
