Recently developed itching help

My young daughter has recently developed severe itching all over her head. She scratches most of the day now but over night it is waking her and she cannot get back to sleep as it gets so bad. She now wants to shave her head (she has long hair) as it is distressing her so much. I think it is a symptom of both sensory overload and emotional stress and during the day we can try to distract her but at night it is causing so much distress and I don't know what we can do to soothe it. She washes her hair every 2-3 days and uses a mild shampoo and now one for itchy scalp but no change. I've checked for other possible causes but nothing else seems to be the cause. Any advice on methods others have used at night time to help an itchy scalp would be most appreciated as I'm not sure what to do at night to help. Thank you

  • If you wash hair more than once a week, you strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils. That could be a factor. As can lice, or not rinsing out the shampoo properly. It could also be something as simple as a fungal infection on the scalp. A medicated shampoo deals with this effectively. Perhaps if you’ve checked all avenues, pop to ask a pharmacist for advice.
