Recently developed itching help

My young daughter has recently developed severe itching all over her head. She scratches most of the day now but over night it is waking her and she cannot get back to sleep as it gets so bad. She now wants to shave her head (she has long hair) as it is distressing her so much. I think it is a symptom of both sensory overload and emotional stress and during the day we can try to distract her but at night it is causing so much distress and I don't know what we can do to soothe it. She washes her hair every 2-3 days and uses a mild shampoo and now one for itchy scalp but no change. I've checked for other possible causes but nothing else seems to be the cause. Any advice on methods others have used at night time to help an itchy scalp would be most appreciated as I'm not sure what to do at night to help. Thank you

  • We have been checking her hair to make sure she washes out products as I think she does leave some in at times and will speak to a pharmacist if it continues thank you

  • Been shopping and got some tea tree products thank you Blush

  • No medications but we have started her on a low dose antihistamine to see if there is an allergy there thank you

  • If you wash hair more than once a week, you strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils. That could be a factor. As can lice, or not rinsing out the shampoo properly. It could also be something as simple as a fungal infection on the scalp. A medicated shampoo deals with this effectively. Perhaps if you’ve checked all avenues, pop to ask a pharmacist for advice.

  • I get a very itchy scalp. Tea tree shampoo and conditioner are the only things that work for me.

  • She's not come off any medicines, has she? Coming off antihistamines can make you itch like mad, found that out recently....

  • Thank you. Unfortunately her hair like mine is very fine and with no weight at all but she is keen to get it cut so perhaps taking a little off will help her anyway. We have thought about rotating the pillows so they don't become as warm, the cases we have repeatedly changed but the pillow itself we can certainly try.

  • If her hair is long and quite full bodied, perhaps the weight of it pulling on the scalp might be a factor. Perhaps having the length shortened might help.Changing the pillow and pillow slips is also something to try.

  • id say theres nothing wrong with having a shaved head if you do go down that route. western culture is weird in that we make fun of or shun shaved heads especially on women, but its not that bad and given its different it makes the person stand out alot more... like that woman in doctor strange, she was bald but she totally rocked the look and looked badass.
