Hi there my 6 year old autistic Son has always had bowel problems. However he also has I believe sensory issues surrounding it too. He will wipe his bottom with his finger and smell it or lick it, whether its got poo on it or not, this happens anywhere, usually typically when I am in a shop and he says "mummy poo" very loudly!!.
He has licked poo off his finger, also smeared it on walls or fences, he also tries to put things up his bottom or in his pants, like crab apples (found half dozen in there once), or plastic toys, various items like a wand.
I am hoping someone out there may have ideas.. please.
Hi izzywizzy23
I can relate to some of the problems you describe. We've had difficulties with one of our children - particularly at night. I believe that, in our case, it's been a sensory issue which has also turned into a habit that's difficult to break. The article below discusses smearing and provides a link to providers of sleepsuits and also for vests which fasten underneath which could be helpful in breaking the habit.http://www.autism.org.uk/living-with-autism/understanding-behaviour/behaviour-common-questions-answered/my-son-has-started-smearing.aspxThe following article describes sensory difficulties which people with ASD may face. It suggests hypo-sensitivity (under sensitive) may make the individual crave strong tastes or smells (i.e. faeces) and that giving the opportunity for that stimulation through other strong foods may help.http://www.autism.org.uk/living-with-autism/understanding-behaviour/the-sensory-world-of-autism.aspxIf any of our other users have any suggestions or experience to share I too will be reading with interest!Good luck.
