As and having children

I know that I don't want children. I am in a relationship and my partner is now OK with this.

I wondered what other people on the spectrum thought about having children. Would they like to have them? For myself I find the whole idea totally crazy - I just don't have that feeling to want them. I can only see negatives.

Thoughts?

  • autism2 you seem to misunderstand:

I did not say that I didnt want children because of AS.

    autismtwo said:

Jon, I don't see what the problem is?

......I did not suggest there was a problem.

  • Jon, I don't see what the problem is ? quote"I would make a poor parent purely on the basis that I don't want children...".. why bring AS into it ? I have aspergers and have two boys, if anything my Aspergers has played a good parental role. I don't see the negative in this, however I could understand a reservation, but this is only human with the unknown. Aspergers may be a factor in the decision but please do not base any decision fully on your aspergers. Normally, aspergers people marry partners who are well organised so there is two parents in the family who are well equiped to cope.

I think what I am trying too express, is,, don't make aspergers a condition in your decision making too have a family or not. Could I go one more and say,, if you love your partner have a family, you will be richer for it long-term but at your age, you may too be too old and set in your own ways. Maybe your partner should seek another mate. As  you expressed, your partner is okay with it NOW. There should not be an okay with it now in a true relationship of love.

  • .....autism....I was raising the subject with AS people because I might better relate to them ....

.....I would make a poor parent purely on the basis that I don't want children...

  • Aspergers negative bias, linked to brainwiring. Jon you will make a good parent. I don't see it as having AS and having children question. You are not retarded ! It is just a life choice, no different too Nt having children choice, please do not make it an AS consideration, make it your own personal choice. From a parent with Aspergers. You would bring lots strenghts to your children having aspergers.

  • I find it hard to make friends, let alone think about having a a relationship, and the 'friends' I do have, all have Aspergers; I only meet them twice a month or so, in any case. I don't have any close friends.

Will I have children? Who knows, but I can't see it happening at the moment. The thought of pregnancy and birth makes me feel very fearful (the pain, changes to the body, risk of complications etc). So it seems very unlikely that I will have children, regardless of the fact that I quite like children, although I hate the noise they sometimes make!

I am too much of a control freak to be able to offer the give and take that is so necessary in a relationship.
