Could my spouse have ASD

My husband has no diagnosis of ASD. He does really struggle with our sons ASD traits and he admits he can’t understand why he does certain things. We are getting help as an family. I had counselling a few months back and amongst a few issues I mentioned my husbands struggles. She said maybe he has ASD, she believes she and her Son have themselves although neither are diagnosed . Could this mean with my husband he could have ASD?

  • The Nephew with Dyslexic tendencies he has sons traits of autism most likely high functioning

  • People often find I think  after being diagnosed with Autism, ADHD/ADD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia or Tourette’s that they think about their family and think actually they might be Neurodiverse too. With my husbands family, his brother has possible ADHD never had a diagnosis  and I believe his nephew was assessed for it but as far as I know he doesn’t have it. Another nephew appears to have dyslexic tendencies and was slow to learn to read and write. On my side I have dyspraxia, My Father has some traits and my Grandmother my Fathers mother definetley had it but it was never diagnosed.

  • Yeah, they'll be knocking around the family.  It might pay to think about other instances of neurodivergence too; dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, torettes and all that in the wider family.

In our family, we know it all comes from my grandad.  He was born in 1895 so never had a diagnosis of any kind, but despite being incredibly intelligent and gifted in many way never learned to read.  My aunts tried to teach him, but it was like "he was trying to do it backward", they said.

One of his sons, my uncle likewise went all the way through school and yet could not read until his kids taught him through comic books, yet he was a truly gifted artist.  Another uncle, who was as "stubborn as a mule" according to my dad certainly had traits. Both his sons were severely dyslexic; their kids are all dyslexic, dyspraxic and/or autistic.  There are others we think may have been on the spectrum but undiagnosed. I am dyslexic and autistic.

Errr and then I'm looking at my mum.  Whether she'd qualify for a diagnosis, who knows?  But I am seeing a trait or three there - doesn't mix outside the family, face doesn't match her emotions and obsessional about her hobbies and now she tells me ambidextrous until her Catholic school wouldn't let her write with the left.  Well, not quite neurotypical, I'd say... lol

  • There is a distant cousin on my side too who has a diagnosis

  • There are traits on both sides of the family.  A few distant cousins and one first cousin has a diagnosis on my husbands side. No immediate family with a diagnosis

  • Thanks, he wonders himself and he probably does have some traits.

  • Only a proper assessment would tell him for sure - if he wants one.  But we do know that it is genetic.  Your son got the traits from somewhere.  An indicator as to whether he could be autistic and might want an assessment would be the AQ50 test.  You'll find that online.  Completing that will spit out a preliminary indicator of the likelihood, albeit it is not a diagnosis.
