Walking and rain

I have a child who has started refusing to walk on the ground when it's wet or when he can see that it's raining. When I tell him to begin walking,  he completely refuses, and does not want his shoes wet. However, he's absolutely fine to walk on the ground when it's wet when he has wellies on. I bought him leather shoes, so it's not that his shoes are letting in

Im just wondering if anyone has advice or strategies I can use to make him walk on the ground when he has his shoes on even if the grounds.wet Unfortunately, I'd allow him just to wear his wellies, but he can't wear them to school

  • My daughter’s school have asked for them to keep wellies under their peg as they have a garden connected to her classroom. Can he wear wellies whilst walking to school then leave them with his coat and change into shoes? I used to wear trainers to and from secondary school and kept my school shoes in my locker

  • Just explain to the school he would prefer to wear wellies. They will make an exception. Or should I say, they should!

He may change his mind. Or he may find a different pair of shoes or trainers might be preferable, so keep trying new ones but be mindful you don’t make it a ‘thing’ or he may well dig his heels in and become more demand avoidant over the subject.

  • I'm guessing maybe he's very proud of his shoes and thinks of the rain as spoiling them? If his shoes have become some sort of special object to him keeping them in good condition might be very important to him?
