So I often wonder what benefits I have received from having my ASD diagnosis 3 years ago? One thing I will say is it's given me a better way of understanding why I get so overwhelmed or anxious around new surroundings.
An example is right now whilst I'm sat in a car showroom waiting for my car's MOT with people chatting, door creaking open and slamming shut, low volume music playing in the background along with a TV being on, the clicks of sales assistants pens etc. It all makes me feel on edge and I cannot wait to get out of here. I am starting to think that I may carry a discrete pair of industrial ear plugs that I can place in my ears when I have times like this. Too much sensory overload at the minute.
I am trying my best to take my mind of the situation by playing games on my phone.
Well like I say at last my diagnosis is actually helping me realise where I can improve on my life by finding solutions.
I do this.
I carry a pair of ear plugs designed for rock drummers around with me (Alpine MusicSafe Pro Ear Plugs). They are useful to have, sometimes even walking along a road with heavy passing traffic can set off my auditory overload. They come with three different inserts which can vary the amount of sound blocking.
I find that situation hellish too. I particularly dislike waiting rooms of any kind - but especially if any potential stressful outcome might occur. Medical things or dentist - just horrendous. But even the MOT car service waiting - I get so tense and it seems to go on forever. So I very much relate to what you’ve written here. I couldn’t stand headphones or earplugs as I feel the need to know what’s happening around me. To not be aware of that would make me more tense!
I use vibes high fidelity ear plugs, they are barely noticeable and you can still hear, it just mutes annoying sounds. Really helped me alot
I'll have a look cheers.
Hi Feline33 I haven't tried any audiobooks but I will certainly look into this though thank you.
I hate this too. Solidarity.

Hi Castle,
Could you listen to an audiobook of your favourite book or listen to your own favourite music and then you could have it at the right sound level that suits you
Hope this helps.
