Right or Left Handed?

I have just been viewing the website of an Autism community group in my local area. On the website it states that "many people with Autism are left-handed", almost implying that the majority of Autistic people are left-handed

As I am right-handed, I find myself wondering if I am in a minority, or if I've misinterpreted that statement.

  • Yeah, a bigger percentage of Autistic people are indeed left handed.

I’m not, neither is my daughter, neither is my mother, neither is my ex lol.

My daughter is ‘sort of’ ambidextrous, as is my ex. I mean, I also use my left hand more than most right handed people.

  • how strange, I've never heard of that before.

    I'm right-handed

  • I'm right-handed too.

  • I'm glad you had morphine to help you through it. Still sounds like your a very calm level headed person. I don't think you sound cold. You sound wise and practical. I tell the children I teach that every day is a learning day as well :-)

  • I’m right handed. Although I always get a bit muddled when using a knife and fork. I’m forever reversing my grip and getting a bit lost with it all. But as long as I get the food to my face, I don’t really care!

  • I was on a lot of morphine! I bet your toes really did hurt. I have a mindset that if you can’t alter something then don’t waste time on it. I know I can sound cold, but it’s better to look for something that will make a situation better. Every day is a learning day.Smiley

  • So I use Braille, which usually requires the use both hands, (although people who have the use of one hand can find ways round this.) On the rare occasions I write in print, (e.g. when signing paperwork) I use my right hand. I use my left hand for knives though

  • Wow you were so calm and together after such a traumatic experience. I can imagine if in your situation I would have fallen apart. I broke three toes when I was in my teens and I can remember crying to the doctor asking if they would ever heal again. I got so upset. Ha, not my best moment.

  • Thank you, a memory that just came back was the consultant coming to my bed to say that the fingers couldn’t be re-attached. He then said that I could have counselling to help me with my loss. My autistic question then was “ will this counselling make my fingers regrow?” his answer was obviously “no”. I just replied with “ well I don’t need it then”. His last comment was, “ We don’t get many people like you, but I wish we did.

  • Sorry to hear about your accident. How awful. I'm glad you've adjusted to your other hand.

  • Right handed but lost three fingers in an accident so taught myself to do more now with my left hand. My brother is left handed.

  • Right Flipper here, But i did use to use either when i was a child.

  • Right-handed too .....however, my partner has told me he always thought I was left-handed because of the odd way I hold my pen when writing and how I favour my left hand in some situations. Maybe I was just harassed into being right-handed at school? I was at a primary school that was a little quaint....

  • I am left handed myself :-) Can't do diddly squat with my right hand. It always amazes the children I teach, they say miss why are you using the wrong hand haha. Most of them are right handed.

  • Right handed wave here :0)
