This might make it easier.

Hi

I notice when using the fourm that it is not always easy to tell 'who' someone is. Or to explain it I mean are they someone with autim, a paret/carer, someone that works with people with autism etc.

Many people start their posts by saying which of the above they are but I think it would be helpful to have this information from the people who reply to posts too. Would it be possible to have a it included next to the persons username on the right in the same gray bar at the top of each post.

I just think it would really help to know if the post was from someone with autism who know's what it is like or from a parent who knows what to do, etc..

Any chance of this happening?

All examples I know of that have something like this use a trust-based system, and, as far as I can tell, it works well.

The inherent anonymity of an internet ident seems generally to encourage people to be more honest and open than they would otherwise be in real life.

  • We often can gues who people are by their E Mails and if we put first names then we might gues the wrong person.

I expect some people in this forum know who I am from other lists and seen me at meetings.

    David.

  • Hi Amy,

That's an interesting suggestion, and I'll raise it with my colleagues. However, such a system would have to operate on the basis of trust - I really don't think it would be fair to ask people to share their medical and professional details with us so that we could 'rate' the users. So it would only be an extension of what we have now, where people can say in the posts or profiles what their connection to autism is.

How would people feel about a trust-based system?

PS: David, if you're still having logging-in problems, please take a screenshot of any error message you get, and send it to community.manager@nas.org.uk with a detailed account of what you did before the error appeared - thanks!

  • Well I used to log in and find when I loged in if I went to the Community it would say signed out.  At the first page I would have signed in. Sometimes it says Connection problems.

    Hopefully it wont happen again.

May be it was my computer not working as at one stage it worked in the Libriary although not at home.

Perhpas not worry about the problem until it happens again.

    Thanks Scorpion.

  • Could you describe the exact steps you take to login and to get in to the Community section, David?

(Don't post any details such as your password though!)

  • I sometimes log in and when I go to community find myslef loged out.

Only recently I have managed to get in to the Community from my home computer.

It is up to the moderators to explain why we have to be annonymous in this forum although we can sometimes gues who each person is.

    David.

  • You may wish to start a new thread, and describe what techinal issues you're having, David.

It may, in fact, not be a problem with the website - I never have a problem logging on, for example.

  • On this Network the NAS have made a rule that one cannot give ones full name.

I do not know if it is possible to get this rule changed.

They want to keep us anonymous that is is the same rule for Asperger United.

On the World Autism Support Network people sometimes give their name if they want to but I remind people to say which country they are posting from.

My complaint is that it is often difficult to log on for technical reasons.

    David

  • I agree with you all.

I think it is important to know the point of view from which a person is posting. It might avoid a lot of misunderstandings.

Optional, of course - but it would be very helpful. Smile

  • I often find I cannot log into this forum so I use the World Autism Support Network instead.

I think the problems are technical.

    David

  • Agreed.

I think this would be a great idea.

Obviously it would have to be optional, as not everyone is necessarily comfortable with having their diagnostic status announced on each and every post.

But it would certainly help in telling 'where a poster is coming from'.

  • I just find it really hard sometimes to work out who someone is so I know what you mean autismtwo. Like you say sometimes I read posts by parens and they are saying things like 'my child thinks this' how do they know! To me no-one can know what it's like to have autism unless they have autism, which is why their is a big difference in posts that come from people with autism compared to those without autism.
Which would be the reason I asked if it was possible to know the diference. Also some additional info could be included such as from parents their children and ages and if they do/do not have autism, or from people with autism their age and age diagnosed etc..

  • It will be good from a view point of view, because honestly some parents, carers talk in the first position but they do not have autism and I find this annoying, it is as if they can speak for the autistic children but the reality is, they can not..
