Introducing..Aspie Like Me - The social network for people on the spectrum

Aspie Like Me

Firstly I would like to say a quick Thank you to everyone that took part in the Aspie Like Me Beta trials. I had over 30 registered users in the end, some of you came for a quick look, some of you stuck around a while but it was all useful information for me to use in developing the live site.

So after some months I am ready to reveal the all new Aspie Like Me social network:
www.aspielikeme.co.uk

For those that havnt heard about it, Aspie Like Me is a social network dedicated to people that are on the spectrum. After being here for a number of months now and having spent a lot of time going around the internet looking for places to talk to other people on the spectrum, I found that there wasnt really anywhere that really took my interest. 90% of the sites are just forums in various guises which is pretty dated and linier.
It has been completely redesigned to be more user friendly and more modern, using a completely different web development platform. I have tried to include all the features people asked for and added a few more that I thought would be useful to people.

Some of the main new features include:
  • Totally redesigned system with a fresher look
  • The ability to create and manage your own personal blogging website within Aspie Like Me. You can choose from 20 themes with each one allowing for full customization.
  • A live chat room
  • Improved Events manager
  • Start your own Group with its own personal forum
  • The optional user map that shows every user on a google map (totally optional, it is off by default)
  • Extended profiles
All the original features are still there too
  • Completely Private (only registered users can view the website)
  • Fully customizable privacy settings
  • A sitewide forum
  • Members directory
  • Latest activity stream
  • Personal profile page

I invite you all to come and register on the new site and try it out for yourselves. Let me know what you think and if there is anything that you think would improve the site.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Matt, aka Sp3ktral

now known as user Hububalli, fancied a bit of a change! :)

  • it is about keeping peoples information private. One thing that became clear to me when doing the beta test was how important it was to people to keep their personal details private. I had a lot of emails asking who can see what?, can I hide this?, can i remove this? I agree to certain extent too, I dont want any random person reading about me and what I have been up to.

One of the most important things I learnt when doing research for this site was that not everyone on the spectrum is the same, some poeple are more vunrable than others and it is my responsibility to make sure these people can use the site and remain safe.

I have been thinking about the idea of allowing public access to the micosites and chat room if people so wish.

I have over 10 years of experience in web development and web promotion so I dont need to pay for that and it doesnt require massive budgets, a lot of the best promotion can be done for free. In terms of sustainability, it currently costs me about £3 a year, not really an issues.
