Probably wondering why no-one's signing up to his site.

It clearly isn't a very social site if people can't get in to join.

I also can't get the dragging task to work.

Well I've tried registering several times now and it doesn't work.  I've tried the dragging task that it has and nothing seems to happen.  Has anyone actually registered successfully?

I don't think I'm being paranoid over this since surely the whole purpose of having an ID is to give annonimity. 

I've not signed up with the new APLM yet (sorry, spektral, just been distracted by other things), but, you probably don't have to actually use your real name!

I guess there is a real trend in society to keep our details private and avoid being exploited in some way. For an online business for example that act of having a real address promotes trust. For the private individual though such openess online could be seen to making themselves vulnerable.

Actually, I can't think of any real risk of using your real address....sorry if I worried you. I guess I was thinking of other types of support groups. I meant my comments helpfully. I joined this forum because I could see lots of interesting comments from varied users so you may want to consider it.

It the internet in 2013, it is impossible to use the internet fully and not provide any personal information. Its hard to do anything online really without providing some personal details. The registration form is very minimal as I didnt want to force users to provide anything they didnt feel comfortable in writing. 

I can assure you it is legimate and sincere.

I think certain people and to a certain extent certain age groups have issues in providing e-mail addresses from my experience it is the minority. Of course I don't want to alienate anyone so this would have to be addressed.

I don't understand why it is so bad to register my domain to my address? I dont have any need to hide it? Its my project and it belongs to me and in reference to what you said in the first post, it also helps cement the sites authentisity. It certain situations hiding behind an agent is in breach of the nominet (or relevant domain managment body) terms. Nominet provide the ability to hide your details for free depending on what your site is about.

I don't feel it is fair to just show peoples activity on the website to entice others in, although it is good advertising, it is not fair on them unless they opted in to do so. I don't want to be like facebook and give everything away unless you tell the site not too.

I will look at opening up some of the pages so people can view certain pages (list of groups for example) but not actually view the content. I think the blogs could be open by default.

I think I will also redesign the front page to expand on what the site is about in more detail with images and examples.

At the moment I am happy just using this forum and asd-forum.org.uk. But good luck :-)

People shouldn't be posting private information on the Internet... Anyone could just join and see it, so requiring sign-up doesn't protect privacy in the slightest, it just discourages participation. 

I won't be joining... I went to see it, but it's completely closed, and I'm not giving you (an anonymous person with no contact details or explanation of who you are) my contact details just to find out I don't like the site.  How do I know you're not some dodgy company who is just trying to get customers and once you have my contact info, you'll just solicit me.(I'm not saying you are, of course).

If you are legitimate and sincere, I applaud your effort to provide resources and outlets but I would really suggest : 

1. Add an 'about' page so people know who's running it and any commercial affiliation. 

2. Open it up so that people can view it and see if there is any legitimate membership or activity.   People don't like giving out their email address, so give them a reason to want to.

Correction : You do at least provide a real email address... but I'm surprised that, if you have all that web experience, why you registered the domain to your own name and address. Wouldn't you want some privacy yourself ?  There are agents who will hold domains for you.

it is about keeping peoples information private. One thing that became clear to me when doing the beta test was how important it was to people to keep their personal details private. I had a lot of emails asking who can see what?, can I hide this?, can i remove this? I agree to certain extent too, I dont want any random person reading about me and what I have been up to.

One of the most important things I learnt when doing research for this site was that not everyone on the spectrum is the same, some poeple are more vunrable than others and it is my responsibility to make sure these people can use the site and remain safe.

I have been thinking about the idea of allowing public access to the micosites and chat room if people so wish.

I have over 10 years of experience in web development and web promotion so I dont need to pay for that and it doesnt require massive budgets, a lot of the best promotion can be done for free. In terms of sustainability, it currently costs me about £3 a year, not really an issues.

Aghhh, I can't stand sites that force you to create an account before you can see anything.

Unless you have a huge marketing budget or want to put a lot of time into promoting your site then its going to be an uphill struggle and hard to see how it can sustain itself.
