My daughters NHS assessment in 2019 was a joke. I won’t even go into detail. And she didn’t get diagnosed.
We went private this year. We’ve just had the draft report through, and she was given 3 diagnoses. That for me is actually ‘my money’s worth’, despite not being able to afford it!
I can’t recall the exact cost, but it’s in the region of £1895. This was for both an ASD and ADHD assessment. He threw tests for dyslexia/dyspraxia/dyscalculia in for free when she noticed she had some difficulties with the practical tests.
I opted to pay half fees at the start, and I’ll pay the rest once everything’s complete. I think a reputable person with give you options to pay.
The time frame was about 4 months, since he works with only 2 patients at any time. We were able to email him about anything any time we felt the need, or had a question, or remembered something new to discuss.
She attended several times for different tests, interviews and filled out plenty of questionnaires. I had 2 to fill out, and lastly we had a lengthy developmental interview. We have one more meeting once we get the final report.
I've just been diagnosed as an adult snd went private. Didnt take that long, a couple of months.
I also know a family thst went NHS for their 11yo daughter who was clearly autistic but she didn't meet the criteria. She then went private a similar time to me and she has now been diagnosed. She went through a rough patch and since being diagnosed seems to be making better choices. She hasn't yet come to terms with the diagnosis but is dealing and understanding more about herself.
I would recommend going private if you can afford it.
I think you can go to the GP and ask for the "right to choose" or something like that? If there is somewhere in your area that does the autism/adhd tests via NHS referral, and your practice has the funds, they have to let you/your son do that xxx
Hello Kate,
I'm sorry to hear that the waiting list to get a diagnosis for your child is around 2 years. Hopefully our community members will help you with their experience in getting a private assessment.
The NAS website has a page on 'diagnosis' and at the very bottom there is a section about 'Private Diagnosis'. Here is the link: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/diagnosis/pre-diagnosis/parents-and-carers
All the best,
