Not dead, simply gone, just like that. How would suburban pets fare without people to feed them? How would the forests, the oceans and the wildlife react if there was suddenly an end to all the hunting, fishing and farming? I imagine it would look a lot like how Chernobyl has become. Nature just taking over all the suburban areas. Some pets might manage to scavenge or become wild but a lot of them would starve.
Apparently there is a wildlife sanctuary at Chernobyl now, full of those Przwaleski horses. No idea how to spell that. I don't know if the horses arrived by themselves or zoologists put them there, but they are thriving and scientists are studying them. There is a documentary about it.
There's a lot of studies into radiation uptake going on there - they've spotted that DNA contains lots of redundant error correction built in so animals can live in places that were considered uninhabitable amounts of radiation.
Chernobyl has been a great learning opportunity. .
