self harming

Hi I have a 17 year old daughter who has aspergers.  When stressed she self harms usually by cutting but just recently she has started to rip her hair out from the roots.

  • Hi wends,

Just wanted to share some links to content that you might find useful to read.

The NAS has a factsheet about self-injury that you may not have read, so please take a look to see if it is helpful.

TheSite.org is a charity website that aims to provide supportive, non-judgemental advice to 16 - 25 year olds. Your or your daughter may find it useful to take a look at the extensive factsheets and case studies available there.

The Bristol Crisis Service for Women is a national service that provides support around self harm. Unfortunately their telephone service is now closed but their email and text service, TESS, is still available. Please take a look to see if the service they offer is something that can help.

You may also want to look at the Parents and Carers section of the Community where some similar issues, especially around hair-pulling have been mentioned - though often related to younger children.

Hope some of the information above helps a bit.

  • Hi have you spoken to her doctor because it might be linked with OCD, look at OCD Action website they have a section about hair pulling ect might help.

I have AS i offeten think about harming myself but it tends to be thoughts caused by OCD.
