Is there an advocacy service for autistic adults in the UK

Hello

We have a local advocacy service run by Rethink volunteers and mine left in Sept 2019 and has not been replaced despite being chased up.

I do not want to work with rethink.

Does anyone know if there is an advocacy service for autistic adults in the uk as I have a consumer complaint regarding a tradesman and Trading standards do not put problems right or get refunds. The tradesman has left my property at risk of leaks through improper work. I contacted the trade body who they are a member of, they sent me a complaints form in Microsoft Word format. I returned it in .pages format. The tradesman would only look at one minor non risky problem a toilet seat and closed the case.

They told me to contact citizens advice bureau but they could not open the .pages document which I put my complaint on to the trade body.

This leads me to think that the trade body could not open it either, so I feel that the important complaints were missed.

The trade body refuse to open the case and I think this is unfair as my property is now at risk of leaks. I have spoken to other plumbers who confirm my feelings on the shoddy work.

I need an advocate to speak to the trade body to open the case again for me as the trade body are not budging yet I feel they have not read my complaint.

Can anyone help.

  • This is what I find sickening, making health and wellbeing cost.

So the false support is just looking like help but doing nothing.

    This sounds really grim.

    What depressing reading.

I'm not good with vagueness, dunno if it's my autism but I like things spelt out.

Being passed from one organisation to another, who do nothing for you must be soul destroying.

  • Its influenced by the current financial situation and lack of funding and the organizations issues with mismanaging their funding of their service despite most of them run a nonprofits or charities.

I am not being cynical when i say that there are no physical or productive support or intervention to support adult with autism. A phone call or facetime conversation isn't adequate support to help people like me learn day to day coping techniques that will help someone with autism sustain Employment & Gain employment.

Mental health services have engulfed neurodevelopmental services for those aged sixteen to twenty five in most area of the UK. the funding isn't going into improving the diagnosing and support of this individuals with neurodevelopmental disorder and learning difficulties and are rarely be assessed for during mental health assessments. Most of the times from experience mental health nurses will refuse to look into it further and their training and understanding is usually out of date or misinformed based on the own individual knowledge.

This is a major issue because the way the under twenty five mental health service operates and makes individuals who are awaiting to be diagnosed between the ages of sixteen and twenty five go through the system multiples time to be lost in the administration system and usually are forced to wait until they are are over the age of twenty five to get the support when they are moved to adult services. These individuals are not only been through crisis from age of sixteen but have missed out on opportunities to attend college and learn skills with the right support in place. most of them once they get the diagnoses can't afford to pay for college which would of been fully funded when they where under the age of twenty five.

The false help which i am talking about is when an organisation and charity use an individual to gain funding from the local authority but don't provide what they agreed to when you signed the agreement, They promised actual support but fail to deliver anything once they have got your signature.

Most of the information provided is negligently by this organisations and should not keep educating parents with such a vague explanation. Most parent miss interpret the information and cause physiological harm to their children.

The employment support i mentioned should be said that i am still waiting for them to arrange to fit me into the group sessions and i was passed on from one organisation to another organization to another organization to another organization to get the same useless support the previous organization was providing.

  • Thanks for passingly feedback back to the team.
It was helpful, I filled out the online enquiry form, thank you.

  • Are the changes for economic reasons?

One to one support, and events for indiuvals on the autism spectrum sounded good. So did counseling and teaching parents about autism. I don't know about the local authorities welfare rights support.

I wonder why the change was very discreetly done? When you say false support, do you mean that there is staff there but they do not help?

The phone is no good for me, too immediate, real time verbal communication, I miss things.

Most the organisation and charity have also changed their focus on age group know only focusing on children and some only focusing on autistic with intellectual disabilities.

It does sound like economic reasons to me.

I understand COVID 19 causing difficulties.

4 sessions seem insufficient to help someone find employment especially if the ND has difficulty communicating in real time.

Funding has been an issue for years with the country's financial budget not funding services for neurodivergent people and people with learning disabilities in fact last time a check it was £0000.

  • Hi Hopeful,

Thanks for the feedback about our Helpline, I have passed that back to the team.

The Helpline are a very small team, and are currently experiencing a very high demand during this unprecedented time. It may be a case of being persistent and may take multiple attempts before you are able to connect through.

The team can also be contacted by enquiry form for a response by email if you would rather not phone again, as I appreciate that you mention repeated calls may not be possible. Details of how to so can be found at: https://www.autism.org.uk/what-we-do/help-and-support/helpline

    I hope this is helpful,

    Kind regards,

    Dani Mod

  • Most of them have changed what they do in General. I try and explain what i mean but it's difficult.

Most of the charities and organisations before 2017 for autism used to provide one to one support, hold events for indiuvals on the autism spectrum, Provide counseling and teach parents about autism. but they have changed into something similar to the local authorities welfare rights support.  the change was very discreetly done. They know only providing information on autism, False support in helping autistic individuals fill out benefits usually over the phone and this was before covid 19.

Most the organisation and charity have also changed their focus on age group know only focusing on children and some only focusing on autistic with intellectual disabilities.

Organisation that help neurodivergent people find employment have drastically changed not providing the face to face support to help individuals gain access to employment. Yes again this was way before covid 19 struck. Know these organisation only other 4 group secession over the phone or computer and that is it and supposedly thats is supposed to help someone find employment.

Funding has been an issue for years with the country's financial budget not funding services for neurodivergent people and people with learning disabilities in fact last time a check it was £0000.

  • Hi and thanks. Rethink have left me hanging since September 2019 when my advocate left. No offence to him but he was a volunteer half my age.

When you say they changed, does that mean because of cost cutting?

  • Hi. Thanks. They didn't give me chance to leave a message, and repeated phone calls to a "brick wall" is a trigger for me.

  • Because the NAS helpline will only refer back to rethink, the NAS directory need to overhauling and better moderating as most the services listed have changed what they do.

  • i know they are pretty busy try again. they are very likely to ask u to go to CAB again.

  • Hi I tried to phone, must say it's not very autism friendly, recorded messages etc. the message said ring back later as they are busy, that put me off. I wonder if there is any other way I can find out.

  • i dont know of one but why not ring the NAS helplines in case they know of someone
