Obsession

Our son has lots of obsessions and at the moment it is xbox.  I have limited his time on the xbox but even when he comes off he talks about it non stop, he talks about the games and the other players and he gets very excitable and emotional and shouts at us alot.  He wont seem to listen to us when we try and advise him on the situation.   We were thinking about writing down some house rules regarding xbox. Does anyone else have these difficulties? I would be grateful for any advice.  He has had other obsessions which have come and gone, but when one obsession goes something always takes its place.

  • As someone on the spectrum, I'd ask you to not limit his enjoyment of his 'obsessions' too much - our 'obsessions' or 'special interests' are what give our lives meaning and value, and limiting our access to and enjoyment of them is akin to locking a neurotypical up in solitary confinement - no matter how short a time it's for, any unwarranted punishment, and that is what it is, of that sort will have a detremental long term effect.
