Help needed if possible

My brother was diagnosed as Aspergers when he was a small child and he’s not 34. We’ve found out recently that he is a guarantor for someone he barely knows and has not spoken to in years. This person has taken out a 10k amigo loan and isn’t paying it back. I think they’ve made 2 payments in the time it’s been taken in April 2017. It’s nearly £400 a month and he’s buried his head in the sand and not told us about it. Well any way we’ve found out.  The person spun a lie that she was having a baby (this part is true) and the partner had left her. He hasn’t... they’re still living together while she’s not paying.

I would class my brother as a vulnerable adult and his perception of things isn’t like others.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of anything like this and if they had any advice as he seems really down and I’m scared he’s suicidal.

Thanks in advance x

  • What a horrible situation to find your brother in. I think you should be able to talk to Amigo on your brother's behalf IF he is with you at the time. I've often dealt with matters on my mother's behalf with financial institutions. I start off the call explaining what I'm ringing about, they'll go through security questions with her as the account holder and confirm with her that I can speak on her behalf, then I get the phone back and deal with the business. If your brother is ok to go through such a procedure you may be able to check with Amigo about their policies with regard to a vulnerable adult..Any information you have on your brother's diagnosis, any care he receives and so on would be useful in building your case.

The Financial Services Ombudsman may be able to help, in the first place with information but later they may take on the case on your behalf. They deal with complaints against financial institutions and they have some good advice on their website which I'll link to below.

Good luck. With you on his side I hope your brother will be ok. Your support will mean a lot to him.
