Help needed if possible

My brother was diagnosed as Aspergers when he was a small child and he’s not 34. We’ve found out recently that he is a guarantor for someone he barely knows and has not spoken to in years. This person has taken out a 10k amigo loan and isn’t paying it back. I think they’ve made 2 payments in the time it’s been taken in April 2017. It’s nearly £400 a month and he’s buried his head in the sand and not told us about it. Well any way we’ve found out.  The person spun a lie that she was having a baby (this part is true) and the partner had left her. He hasn’t... they’re still living together while she’s not paying.

I would class my brother as a vulnerable adult and his perception of things isn’t like others.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of anything like this and if they had any advice as he seems really down and I’m scared he’s suicidal.

Thanks in advance x

  • Have you tried contacting the citizens advice bureau they may be able to offer you some advice on this. Have you tried contacting amigo on his behalf they probably won't be able to discuss the details without his consent due to the data protection act but they might be willing to listen

If not I would suggest that you call the helpline on this site they will probably have more specific information on his rights in this matter

Sorry I can't be more help

  • Yes, I would second that. Due to my difficulties with financial management, I've gotten myself into a pickle with debt several times, and I have always found the CAB extremely helpful, especially as I have great difficulty making telephone calls myself to explain my situation to creditors. Many will have a member of staff with specialist knowledge of disability issues, so make clear when booking an appointment that your brother's Aspergers is a significant part of the problem.

    Best wishes.
