I'm not too keen on my son joining facebook or other networking sites but I'd like him to socialise online. This forum is for over 16's only so it would nice if there was one for 13-16 yr olds to discuss things that matter to them.

Hi all. I am totally new to all this. My daughter is 15 and has just been (3 months ago) diagnosed with ASD. She doesn't have any friends and spends most of her time playing games or watching YouTube. I'd love her to find some 'safe' forum online where she can make friends and talk about how she feels as I think this would be really beneficial to her. I'd really appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction. Even better if this site could create a forum for 13-16 year olds!
This forum has a number of late teens who contribute from time to time. There are fairly strict rules about not posting any private details so I would consider it fairly safe. It is moderated and the moderators are quick to act if anything untoward happens.
Hi there, my son is 17 and was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 8 and then atypical autism at 13. He is finding it extremely difficult especially as hes approached a teenager/young adulthood. Are there any teenage forums where he can talk to others?
Thanks for the question, there really is a lack of provision for under 16s it would seem. It's something we've looked into to try and find what we can offer to people using the forum who turned out to be below the age range. I'm afraid there wasn't a lot.
One possible suggestion was the Adolesecent Autism Forum of wrongplanet.net
Given the size of Wrong Planet it's a pretty active area aimed at young adults, so is one possible suggestion. As with anything we'd mention as a link, we can't guarantee the quality of any service so do check it out yourself.
We'll all keep looking though, hopefully there may be more out there, especially with a UK focus, that we've yet to discover. If other people have any suggestions we'd be interested to hear them as well.
Thanks, that would be great.
My son who has a diagnosis of high functioning autism was interested that I'd joined the 'community' and that it was for over 16s. Our conversation then turned to whether there was a community for teens.
Hi Jenniferwave
Thanks for your post. I will bring your idea to the attention of Jim who has helped set up the forum and ask him to consider your idea.
Thanks again

I think a forum for under 16s who have autism or who have a link with autism through a sibling, relation, friend... would be a great idea. If it isn't possible to set one up here does anyone know of a specific autism online chat place for 13-16 year olds?
not trying to spam... but, chat.icq.com is the most commercially popular internet-relay-chat (irc) network, and is for 13s & above... a great way to meet people from all over the world, to explore new languages & cultures and global current affairs, all from the comfort of your pc... irc is especially good for autistic people because there are all kinds of geeky commands to learn in order to operate & administrate chatrooms, eg "/mode #roomname +v nickname" ... and then it gets more advanced all the way into computer programming
