Two in one family

Hi, I've got two sons with ASD. The eldest has Fragile X and Epilepsy as well. The youngest doesn't have fragile X but I am waiting for the first fit. Does any one else have any experience of this. We were under the impression that the eldests childs ASD was caused by the fragile x but no-one ever mentioned the possibility of the second child being the same without the gene.

  • Epilepsy can sometimes be genetic. It may not always present in childhood. I had it as a child. My dad started having seizures when he was in his 40s and a cousin started having them when he was in his late 20s.

    ASD is also genetic. Not everyone with ASD will have other medical conditions. I know at least 2 people who don't - I do and there's meant to be a link between at least 2 (maybe even 3) conditions I have and ASD.

  • To put it simply, ammadom, as I understand it (I'm no expert, just someone with Asperger's) ASD does not imply Fragile X and/or Epilepsy, nor, I believe, vice versa.

    Think of it like this: Not all people with blond hair have blue eyes, and not all people with blue eyes have blonde hair - it's the same with ASDs and other commonly associated conditions.
