I'm really curious about...

Why things like white noise others find soothing and I find really irritating and frequently painful?

Like vibrating things, I can't use an electric toothbrush because the vibrations tickle and itch, anything stronger than this like a massager and I find them painful too?

I see lots of threads about things like this and they're always things that are recomended to autistic people, but they don't work for me and I wonder why, if theres something wrong with me as these things are so common. Another one is fidget toys, they leave me cold, is it because I'm just autistic and don't have ADHD as well?

I feel like theres a lot of confusion about where one leaves off and the other begins and that not having ADHD as well is a bit of a disapointment to many professonals? Although I think so few of them actually listen properly they may just shove stuff at people that dosen't work for them and then don't have anything else left.

  • For me white noise could be irritating or pleasant, it depends. My granny had an old Russian refrigerator that made constant brrrr and I used to sit next to it and instantly,  subconsciously started building my own music in my head and I could actually listen to it. It was same in old generation trams in my town. I enjoyed my own music in my head without headphones. It also happens, that I don't notice the sound at all. But there are situations when a repetitive sound comes so deep to my head, that it start torturing me and I can hear it long after it stopped. I think that maybe for some ND people this white noise is supposed to neutralise other loud or painful sounds. There is absolutely nothing wrong in disliking it.

  • Whats Autistic AF?

I'm dyslexic and dyspraxic as well as autistic, but honestly I don't feel that my autism is particularly well understood, there seems to be a presumption that you will have ADHD as well from professionals. As my autistic symptoms seem to be among the less common ones, I feel it just gets glossed over and ignored. Maybe as I never had any post diagnosis support at all, I never found what was available and now there seems to be no support for autistic adults in North Wales at all.

  • I'm sorry I myself had no idea what is autistic AF and I can't see, where did I write it? It must have been a typo

  • To me, B, you often come across as quite waspish when someones confused by something you find easy and asks for clarification.

    Charming.

  • Well B, actually your above post is one of those that read as hostile to me, as do some of Iains comments on this thread as well as on my post asking if anyone had tried Non VOC paints. To me, B, you often come across as quite waspish when someones confused by something you find easy and asks for clarification.

Yes I've been upset a bit recently, I've had a lot going on, outside of the usual hassles of life as an autist, but it feels very alienating when I try and explain how I feel in a slightly comedic way and get slapped back down again. I will own to being quite senstitive about some things, especially not being believed or being doubted about how and what I feel. I know my autism manifests differently to that of many others here and that I really struggle with some things, like tech, and I know it drives many of you crazy, it drives me cazy too, especially as whatever I try and do to get better dosen't work and then people don't believe that either. I feel stuck in a loop of misunderstanding and being told off for it.

There can also feel at times as though theres a narrative of how autism and ADHD are expressed and it's not a narrative that fits me and how experience the world, so I feel like an outsider again, in a place were I should feel included. It's about far more than emojis and text speak but the way site opperates and what feels like on the one hand to much moderation and on the other not enough.

Please note that I've owned my feelings in this post and haven't tried to blame anyone, just tried to explain how I feel and where I fit or not into the site, and that seems to me to be firmly on the naughty step.

  • but I'm not allowed to say that either because others get upset and angry.

I would like to see some evidence of of 'others' getting 'upset and angry' at these points of yours being made.

Personally if I can't relate to something, I just ignore it rather than pick someone up over it.

We are all different and having different ways of communicating and I don't feel that one person's way is better than another's.

There are also many ages present on the forum and therefore different types of communication ie:

littered with abreviations, text speak, symbols, emoji's and non Latin alphabets,

    will be displayed here.

You yourself seem upset rather a lot.

  • Well, Homebird, we're a little band of confusion, I wonder if anyone else will join us? I often give up on threads that have no continuity because the "computer" has "decided" how we should conduct conversations, which of course isn't in the way that human beings converse, even autistic ones. But don't tell anyone because others will get upset by our confusion caused by addlepated programing on the cheap.

Its not just disjointed conversations that make me give up, it the ones littered with abreviations, text speak, symbols, emoji's and non Latin alphabets, but I'm not allowed to say that either because others get upset and angry.

Oh what a bad girl I am, anyone else want to join me on the naughty step?
