I'm really curious about...

Why things like white noise others find soothing and I find really irritating and frequently painful?

Like vibrating things, I can't use an electric toothbrush because the vibrations tickle and itch, anything stronger than this like a massager and I find them painful too?

I see lots of threads about things like this and they're always things that are recomended to autistic people, but they don't work for me and I wonder why, if theres something wrong with me as these things are so common. Another one is fidget toys, they leave me cold, is it because I'm just autistic and don't have ADHD as well?

I feel like theres a lot of confusion about where one leaves off and the other begins and that not having ADHD as well is a bit of a disapointment to many professonals? Although I think so few of them actually listen properly they may just shove stuff at people that dosen't work for them and then don't have anything else left.

  • For me white noise could be irritating or pleasant, it depends. My granny had an old Russian refrigerator that made constant brrrr and I used to sit next to it and instantly,  subconsciously started building my own music in my head and I could actually listen to it. It was same in old generation trams in my town. I enjoyed my own music in my head without headphones. It also happens, that I don't notice the sound at all. But there are situations when a repetitive sound comes so deep to my head, that it start torturing me and I can hear it long after it stopped. I think that maybe for some ND people this white noise is supposed to neutralise other loud or painful sounds. There is absolutely nothing wrong in disliking it.
