ASD and OCD, How common is having both?

Hey all,

I am currently being assessed for the ASD and have been told I am to be assessed for OCD.

I was wondering how common is it to have both, as I feel I do have both, but I am slightly confused as I feel they kinda counter act against the other, giving me the feeling that I could have either, neither... or both?

I read a great quote which sums it up for me well I think.

'Autism is my Colosseum, OCD is the Lion'

Any Thoughts?

Thanks all

  • Have you been diagnosed with severe OCD. What sort of OCD do you have as it wasn't clear from what you wrote. I have been in hospital before and come across those who had severe types but to the typical things washing their hands and drying them and it seemed too crippling to live a normal life. I know it comes in different types so I was wondering how it affected you?

  • Hi, I say I wouldn't have the contamination type of OCD per se.  I would tend to focus on ''just right'' and symmetry of OCD whilst in past have struggled with forbidden thoughts and Harm OCD.  These being thoughts that I know go against who I am, but cannot help it, this then ties in with the autistic behaviours I would show.  I must stress that I am currently awaiting an assessment for the OCD and currently in the process of ASD diagnosis.

    Thanks for getting it touch.
