Am I in Burnout

Am I in burnout?

I’m EXTREMELY fatigued.  Have been fatigued off and on for months.  Sometimes this fatigue lasts days.  Sometimes it lasts only one day.   I don’t know what’s causing it.  Today I was also more irritable, I was feeling grumpy or angry, and I was quicker to lose patience and get frustrated and snap at someone.

I had a one hour nap yesterday and it didn’t help much with fatigue feeling. My eyes feel soooooo heavy.  And doing anything feels like such a challenge. I tried just taking it easy today, watching TV or reading and avoiding others, and fatigue is only slightly better tonight.  Irritability and grumpiness is gone this evening.

I’m not sure what’s happening and how to prevent it and how to recover from it.

I’m a big bookworm.  Should I not read when I feel like this?  Is that too much “work” for my brain? Is watching TV ok?

thanks for any advice or input

  • It could be burnout. It could also be due to physical issues - such as vitamin or Iron deficiency or not getting enough rest and sleep. My eldest was feeling exhausted and they had a blood test at the doctors and they were deficient in iron and B12. I think also things can have more than one cause - so perhaps it’s part stress and burnout and partly physical? These things can interact with each other. How is your diet? I’m vegetarian and at some times in my life I’ve been low in Iron.
So I would make a list of all the things that you think might be making you feel so tired and exhausted. Eg do you spend a lot of time looking at screens? Do you get fresh air and exercise every day? Are you drinking enough etc etc.

  • The symptoms you describe do align with burnout.

There is an article about it on this website that has some good advice too: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/mental-health/autistic-fatigue

Most people lack the ability to focus on a book when in this state so book recommendations are of limited use here - it is probably best to focus on restoring a healthy balance in your life first then read up on it as it will almost certainly happen again if you don't take steps to prevent it.

We cannot offer medical advice here so I would just recommend reading the article for now.

If you find casual reading helps you regulate then do that. Studying is a different issue as you are trying to retain the information and understand it rather than just being entertained. Similarly with TV - if it helps you relax and regulate then it is probably a good thing.

Do what works for you to get back into a healthier state.
