Autistic teenager stressing about WW3 and being called up

My son is 17 and has seen the news that people will be called up. Obviously the media take a stand that makes it sound like this will happen. He is texting me totally petrified and I don’t know enough fact about this to know the best way to calm him. I have said he won’t go if he doesn’t want to but the news is just saying one thing. Does anyone know any facts to help alleviate his stress, I am really worried about his mental health. Many thanks.

  • People are suggesting that Russia may attack a NATO country in 10-20 years time, but that appears to be a reference to a potential attack on the Baltic states.

Russia’s entire economy is on a war footing and it’s still struggling in eastern and southern Ukraine. They don’t have the manpower or equipment to go to war with another European country.

The reason senior military figures (not just in Britain) are saying these things is partly to wake people up to the reality that Russia is on a war footing and partly to prepare the public and the government for the reality that we need to increase defence spending and production.

If Russia was stupid enough to attack, let’s say Estonia, NATO would have to respond but I cannot envision a UK government conscripting our young and sending them to fight there.

However, re autistic and ADHD people in the armed forces - they are allowed to join they just need to pass certain tests. There are lots of autistic people in the army.

  • Autistic people are not allowed to join the army :)

  • Also, seeing a bit of 'war time Government' rhetoric from the Tories right now, presumably yet another desperate attempt to garner support for the GE from the older electorate.

That's all it is, really, nobody's going to be forced to join up.

  • And also if you have ADHD you need to be "symptom free" for a few years.

  • “The British military has a proud tradition of being a voluntary force and there is absolutely no suggestion of a return to conscription,” - the Ministry of Defence

Basically it's an old General spouting nonsense because he's upset about the army not getting as much funding as he'd like.

  • Tell him that autistic people aren't allowed in the military and therefore he won't be called up.
