Lately I've been hearing what sounds like whispers and I'm not sure what it's related to. Could it be autism related? I suffer from anxiety as well and a quick Google suggested it could anxiety and stress related. I'm always feeling both anxious and stress so I'm wondering if this is causing it.

It started last year. I keep hearing a "psst", like someone is trying to get my attention but look around and no one is there. It's freaking me out and I'm not sure what to do about it. I've been to the doctors for autistic help and that resulted in mental health people getting involved last time even though I wasn't mentally sick and it was horrific to go through. I don't want them getting involved again.

It's not nasty in nature and it's not all the time. There's no bad thoughts either. It's like I hear this maybe a few times a day and it's only a few seconds each time.

I'm not sure who to talk to about this. I worry I am mentally ill but I don't know. I could just be overreacting.

  • Hi some types of psychosis can be mild. I have had mild stuff but it does not worry me.  It can be caused by stress. Also Autistic people can have atypical kinds of psychosis according to research.

Some might see it as a spiritual experience such as ESP or hearing spirits trying to communicate with oneself.

  • I understand how that could be destressing

If you are worried about this but don't want to go to a GP yet, there are a number of charitable organisations that run good helplines and information lines.

Mind is the classic, https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/helplines/ They can help you talk through it. They also have an email address if phone calls aren't for you. Their local branches vary in what they offer, but there might be a specific local in person centre that you can try if that suits you.

If text lines is the thing for you, basically all of them just go back to SHOUT. https://giveusashout.org/ I've found them very good over the years, especially with self help stuff.

Rethink also run an advice line that I've heard good things about. https://www.rethink.org/aboutus/what-we-do/advice-and-information-service/?utm_source=button&utm_medium=button&utm_campaign=advice

One of the things that is worth noting is that not all of these have experience with autism, although SHOUT has been okay for me regarding that over the years

Some specialist services are then available for particular areas or for particular ages.

Hope this helps if you're looking to get more information

  • Could be Autistic auditory hallucinations. With sensory disregulation, either due to anxiety that is internal, or external overload this can happen. Some hallucinations can be very real. My own view is they are a part of me and accept them, do not fight. Work with them if possible, certainly do not oppose them. I have never known them cause harm, beyond fixating and stressing on them. For which there is no need. I see it as the mind trying to regulate itself through expression.
