Not waking up until 2 pm

I believe that I'm undergoing a shutdown.

I don't wake up until, at least, 2 pm most days; and I miss out on so much.

Traditionally, I'm more productive at nighttime. As a young boy, I had no issues getting up in the morning; it was after graduation that I lost out on so much.

My expectations didn't help matters either. I was expected to have a job, wife and kids after growing up. Now, I feel like a mess.

  • I have spent years saying that my body clock has a mind of its own and does its own thing. Fortunately, I'm not really one for rigid routines, so I just go with the flow and work around my erratic body clock... unless there is a specific reason why I need to be awake at a particular time (i.e. to attend an appointment).

  • I know how u feel   typing at 3.0 am !!   set your alarm for 12.00 and then 1 hour earlier every day.     be kind to yourself xx

  • I’m lucky to be self employed, I struggle to make any money, autism landed on me 16 months ago. I still struggle, but to know why I never fitted in for 50+ years has finally given me a life. I am still struggling, not knowing was much worse. I tend to have sleep tea and a Nytol 50mg. They are available as 25mg. Obviously I’m not advocating them, they just help me.

  • We all appear to keep very similar hours. I wonder if this is significant?

  • We are the only animal on the planet that wakes up in the morning because,  we are awoken by an alarm clock. Every other animal sleeps as much as it needs to, or when the sun comes up. Some are obviously nocturnal, I often don’t  sleep, anxiety and brain processing everything is often too much. I use audiobooks though the night. This happens for days and then I shutdown into sleep mode, I then have to work and want to sleep.

  • I never get up before I need to as I've always been rubbish in the mornings.

Many years ago, I took a job on permanent late shift -  1800hrs - 0200hrs, it suited my bodyclock perfectly, and it paid well!

Before that, for a short while, I started work each morning at 0400hrs........ believe me, that job just had to go.

We just need to find what works for us.

  • Good evening Desmond,

    I didn't wake up until 2.30pm today.....although I didn't go to bed until 8am !

More generally, like you, I seem to be significantly more productive at night AND, also like you, since I went grey (mid forties) I've really struggled to get up in the morning although before then I was able to wake and leap out of bed at "stupid o'clock" - ie 5am ish.

I had hoped that knocking the booze on the head would have helped me to return to early-riser status, but in fact, it has made it significantly worse!  I now seem entirely unable to summon the energy, will and consciousness to get out of bed no matter how many alarms I set and how badly I want to, or need to, get up in the morning.

Personally, I think it is an age-related matter for me - too old and wise to stress myself out with demands I don't want to satisfy.

Similarly, I know you to very wise indeed, so no need to panic yourself if you are on a "shutdown" phase at the moment.  You know you will survive and pop out the otherside when you are good and ready.  Don't beat yourself up brother.  Stay sanguine.

I do hope your fug clears enough so that you can enjoy some of this Friday evening.

    Best regards
