Recent diagnosis, separating anxiety and autism

Hello Wave

I recently got a formal diagnosis for autism at 36. I also have had a lifetime of anxiety.  I am now trying to separate the two, and try to identify each from another. I'm trying to do this so I can learn better coping strategies, hopefully.

Does anyone have any tips who may be autistic and struggle with anxiety too? In particular I have bad health anxieties - they only seem to arise if I am ill.

Another thing I struggle with is if someone doesn't reply, I get really frustrated and over think and think about it to the point where I want to block the person so I can stop over thinking. I think this is anxiety, but since my recent diagnosis I am wondering if anyone can relate to this from an autism point of view.

Thankyou

  • Well, I can certainly empathise with the health anxiety... phew! Where would I even start with that one?

But you know they aren't something you can "seperate". We often have these anxieties because we are autistic yet trying to live in a world not built for us. If only I could have been born with: "Autistic synesthete with mega SPD. Medics handle with extreme caution and compassion" tattooed on my backside, maybe I wouldn't have half the health anxieties that I do.

It's a question of identifying how the interaction of your autism with the environment is causing you anxiety and trying to communicate that to others and eliminate as many of the stressors as possible.

    The two are intertwined.

Thank you Dawn that's very helpful way to approach it, I appreciate your reply
