Working full time with people: how do deal with their expectations?!

Do any of you people have a full time job- like 35 hours or more a week? I have just started a new job and my mental health is causing problems for me. I have a lot of anxiety about my new job and my capability and what will be expected of me.

I have now have experienced behavioural issues related to this that have resulted in a dispute. I have only been in the role for two weeks and the health problems are affecting me. I have been to councelling but this is not very useful in a busy work environment where it is expected that I should just learn like people that do not have chronic mental health problems.

I don’t want to stop working either as like to do practical jobs and I need the money to pay for my mortgage.

I am looking for advice from anybody in a similar situation  and how did you deal with mental health problems and a full time job where you had to work with other people that may or may not help in ways you find useful.

Working from home hasn’t been an option for me as I work in a healthcare environment. Love the work, but can’t control the panic and anxiety around others though.

  • It's a reasonable adjustment that your employer can outreach to the 'access to work' scheme to get someone to sit in and support you to engage with others. but the waiting time on that request can take weeks.

  • Thank you. My new manager wants to refer me back to occupational health. I really don’t mind the work but forming new working relationships seems very hard.

  • Hey Pookywombat,

I don't work full time, I can't, but I recently was put in touch with an autism advocacy service by my GP (I'm sure there are charity run ones that don't need a referral) who can speak to your employer on your behalf and they do all the awkward and scary parts of explaining to employers what they owe you as a human being and what your deserve to receive in terms of adjustments and support from an employer. It can be a small as "I want to start work 15mins before everyone else and leave 15mins early so I can miss the rush at the doors" or as big as you need. The Equality Act is there so you cann stay in work so please use it. You deserve to have a job that you feel like you can stay at. Hope things get better for you!Watermelon

  • I work in an office full time, as part of a small team, I have in the past 3 months been suffering from burnout and a small meltdown.

Ask for a workplace needs assessment and they will assess the situation, what effects it has on you and they can make adjustments.
